Rick Flathers Trail Fund
In Memory of Rick Flathers
As the sun was setting on March 7th, a good man was taken from us, all too soon. Rick Flathers was riding for home when for some unknown reason he fell from his horse. In an instant he was gone. The accident is wrapped in unanswered questions, a mystery that may never be solved.
Family, friends, and neighbors shoulder a heavy burden of grief, as Rick was loved and admired by so many. The news of his passing has shaken the entire Orange Park Acres community, leaving everyone shocked and in disbelief. There are no words to express the depth of pain and sadness that the family is experiencing. The lives of those he has left behind are forever changed.
Rick was easily recognized by his big smile, twinkling blue eyes, and a contagious sense of humor. He was a truly generous man, who was as quick with his wallet as he was with his time to help those who needed him. Undeniably, the softest spot in his heart was saved for Nancy, his one true love and soulmate. The two were inseparable and enjoyed a special zest for life. Rick seemed to know how to squeeze the joy out of every trip and activity they shared.
Rick was passionate about his community and felt so fortunate to have the backyard trails throughout Orange Park Acres. He spent decades riding local trails, most often with Nancy at his side. Together they rode for pleasure, trained for competitions, and exercised many different horses through the years. Of late, they had turned from their focus on quarter horses into a new interest of gaited breeds. One could not help but admire and smile as they glided by on a spotted Icelandic or a Rocky Mountain horse.
Knowing Rick’s deep connection to horses, community, and trails, it was not hard for the family to decide on a fitting place to direct donations in his memory. If you feel so inclined, you are encouraged to support the maintenance and betterment of OPA Trails with your donation to the Rick Flathers Memorial Trail Fund, via Orange Park Community Corporation (OPCC), a 501C3 nonprofit organization.
Despite Rick’s tragic ending, those who love him know that he would want the community to stay horse strong. Please everyone, follow your dreams and ride on.
