Gwen & Katie learn Creole in Haiti!
We both felt a strong urge to go learn Creole this summer by immersing ourselves for 2-3 weeks in Haiti. We found a quality language school (ETS) in Port au Prince, which will provide 4-5 hours of instruction, 5 days/week. We'll get to practice our budding Creole with community members there, and experience the intricacies of the culture through immersion in the community.
One of Katie's high school batch-mates, Rhyan, also runs an orphanage not too far from the language school; we're excited to visit her, and gift her with useful items for her orphanage.
The full cost of language school (including room & board) is covered by $500/week. (Gwen is staying 2 weeks, and Katie, 3.) We just bought plane tickets for $500 each. And with $100 for incidentals, we expect that together, our trip will cost around $3,600 in all.
We fly out Sat, Aug 13th!
We're excited for this opportunity to push through the language barrier a bit, and be able to more fully connect with Haitian families here. Of course we'll keep learning the language when we return; we just feel the immersion & language school will lay an essential foundation that will enable us to do that.
