Save the Saloon…The Piseco Lake Historical Society's unique 1880s Riley Tavern in the Adirondacks!
- The Piseco Lake Historical Society is raising funds to maintain the historic Riley Tavern and Riley House located on the museum grounds on Old Piseco Road in Arietta, NY. The old saloon dates to the 1880s and is the last surviving tavern from the rip-roaring days of the lumber and tannery industries in Piseco and the Town of Arietta. The Riley Tavern still contains its original 19th century bar complete with hand-carved cherry rail, an iron footrest, and barred windows used to secure the beer and whiskey during a time of lawlessness in this little Adirondack town. The backroom of the tavern, once used for high stakes poker games, may still be viewed, and was where disagreements were once decided with fists, knives, and pocket pistols! The buildings are now used to display museum collections for the Piseco Lake Historical Society, and the museum is open to visitors on the weekends during the summer months.
- All donations will go toward future maintenance of the buildings and cedar shingle roof, which replicates the materials used more than 140 years ago. This building is an Adirondack gem and its preservation is imperative to the community, the many visitors to this beautiful region of New York State, and future generations.
The Piseco Lake Historical Society is a 501(c)(3) Not For Profit organization that was organized in 1987 to preserve and promote the unique history of the Piseco Lake area located in the southern Adirondack Mountains.
