The Good Table Cafe and Planting Justice Nursery
The two nonprofit organizations have formed The Good Table, LLC to acquire and save the historic Adachi Nursery property in El Sobrante from being razed and developed into another dirty gas station, and instead, they are turning the historic 4700 sq foot building and 1.3 acre grounds into the following:
1) a "pay-what-you-can" cafe and healthy foods marketplace sourcing organic food and medicine from local food justice projects and farms including Planting Justice's 4 acre farm less than 1 mile away;
2) a spiritual center, gathering space, and arts venue offering yoga, meditation, spiritual ceremony, health and wellness education, arts and music programming; and
3) a retail nursery and farm store selling organic fruit trees, vegetables, herbs, native plants, and other medicinal/edible plants grown at Planting Justice's 2 acre nursery at 319 105th Ave in the Sobrante Park neighborhood of East Oakland, in addition to beekeeping supplies, greywater kits, and seeds, tools, and materials to help our community grow healthy food and sustainable landscapes. The partnership is also likely to host weekly farmers' markets, permaculture/agroecology courses, and more!
By supporting the Good table cafe and spiritual community and the Planting Justice nursery and farm store, you'll be helping to keep the important legacy of the Adachi family and other Japanese farms and nurseries alive, helping to create family-sustaining living wage-jobs for disenfranchised and economically marginalized people, and creating a community cafe, healthy foods marketplace, gathering space, and farmers' market in a community that currently has none of the above!
As of April 24th, the Good Table LLC will have closed escrow. Hooray!
The partners will then need to raise $700,000 to build out a commercial kitchen, cafe, venue, and nursery/farm store.
We're hoping community donations through this campaign can spring us forward to open in early 2020.
In occupied Ohlone territory, we are working to breathe right livelihood, respect for our Earth Mother/Creator, and care for one another and all of our relations, back into the infrastructure of the land and economy itself. Join us!
