Our mission at Red Hook Dog Rescue is to serve our local community. Whether that means providing food to our neighbors to help them keep their pets, arranging low-cost veterinary care, or pulling long-stay dogs from our city shelter or at risk list, or helping to rehome pets and keep them out of the shelter altogether, our rescue works in our community. Our city and its shelters are in crisis, and we want to help.

That’s where you come in. We need funds, and we need fosters. Every dollar is appreciated and used with care. Please consider a donation of any size to help us help more pets

END OF THE YEAR FUNDRAISER!

It’s the end of the year (yay!) For our hearts and souls it has been a good year. But not for our bank account. Please donate!

We have helped and are still helping some pretty special dogs and cats land in the very best places!

Bailey (who ran through two NYC tunnels) and big sweet Bruce are our ongoing projects. We've learned so much from them and have lots of information for sharing and teaching. Yes, we do pick some tough cases!

We have been able to help some folks re-home their animals, keeping them out of the shelter system.

Miracles too: originally 96 lbs and blind, spaniel Jake is now 60-ish lbs and a comfort to many small dogs in the daycare where his adopter works. Prior to that, he helped his first foster recover from a difficult foster experience. He just leaves a trail of calmness where ever he goes... and a tennis ball.

Gizmo is a not-so-tiny pom and owner surrender landed with a family that had suffered huge trauma. He immediately took on the role of support dog as if he had been born to do that. Sent from heaven, we all thought.

Stormy was a foster for someone who was planning to move back to Spain. Too tall to travel in cabin we thought we'd have to find him a local home. He made such a profound change in his foster's life that she took him home, and they both are thriving. We have many more heartwarming stories like this.

And finally, we have accumulated/rescued some humans whose pets need help (mostly medical). We try to help them when we can as we do with any of our adopters, forever.

We don't boast (or post enough) about our accomplishments. We don't take on many dogs each year. We just spend a lot of time with the ones we do, and their families, to make sure they are never ever homeless again. We love to do this. We don't like to ask for donations, but we desperately need them. No amount is too small. Monthly donations are even more appreciated. .Meet the new Bailey! We've been quiet for months. But from the moment he left VERG and went to a DogsPalace in CT we were busy. Bailey was busy. Caterpillars form cocoons, something happens inside, many things actually, which no one sees and a butterfly emerges. So it has been with Bailey. Evee (Linden) his trainer was very hands -.off. She helped him learn how to be a dog..use his nose first. We presented him with snuffle mats and puzzle toys. It was captured on video (we have so much!) and we saw him get curious and play even. ( her updates can be seen in an update) in an updatOh! and he got a friend. Evee pulled a dog who was about to be euthanized from the shelter where she was working. Their first meeting (through chain link) was like long lost friends had finally found each other. Bailey had met another dog through the fencing and it made him happy ..but not like this. We till could not touch Bailey, but we knew it was time to get out of his cocoon.

We built him a huge play area 25 x 55. with help from many. And the rest is history!

The beginning

MIRACLE PUPPY escapes Brooklyn digs, crosses state lines, and goes through two tunnels before his rescue on a ledge! In a story filled with dramatic twists and turns, 7-month-old Bailey, a German Shepherd/Akita cross from Brooklyn, escaped his Red Hook yard earlier this month and made it all the way to New Jersey. Over 10 terrifying days Bailey was spotted swimming in the Gowanus Bay practically running through the Brooklyn Battery Tunnel and then the Holland Tunnel and landing at the Home Depot in Jersey City. This incredible puppy miraculously survived the cold waters and 10 days and nights on his own. His adventures, however, led to a serious injury which required daily bandage changes and ultimately many stitches.He has been healing at VERG where he has captured the hearts of the whole staff.

In the weeks leading up to his escape, Bailey had been working with our founder and professional trainer, Harriet Zucker. His family had contacted Harriet for help rehoming him. She was slowly but surely gaining the trust of the extremely fearful puppy, before he fled his yard. Red Hook Rescue will continue to support Bailey's medical recovery, training, and rehoming effort.

We would like to thank the MANY heros that came to Bailey's rescue: Stella Panzarino of Lost and Found Pets in Brooklyn, Tim Gilman, tracker/trapper Jim Tierney, Amanda Barstow, NJ Port Authority Officer Andrew Vignapiano who caught Bailey on the ledge at a Home Depot, the Liberty Humane Society, Animal Control Officer Jacobson, VEG in NJ, the entire staff at VERG where Bailey is currently recovering.

We are raising funds to cover Bailey's veterinary costs (currently over $16,000) and ongoing training once he is released. 9/16/20 UPDATE:

We’re home and have excellent news! Loki had his CT scan and it looked totally normal. He just has a big lumpy skull with the excellent CT scan results, the doctor recommended that we forego the biopsy. Which also means a lower vet bill! With this happy update, I’m going to close this fundraiser as we now have the funds we need. Thank you all for donating and sharing and helping me make sure my Loki has the vet care he needs. And big thanks to Harriet and Red Hook Dog Rescue for always being such a great source of support!

Loki is my sweet baby boy who has seen me through the most difficult phase of my life. I started fostering him at the beginning of the pandemic and fell completely in love. Those of you who follow me on social media know how obsessed I am with him. He's playful, smart, affectionate, and full of personality. He is truly part of my family. Loki is still a foster through Red Hook Dog Rescue, a special-needs rescue helping save NYC's most at risk dogs: seniors, blind, deaf, amputee, etc. And RHDR/Harriet Zucker has been an incredible resource and source of support throughout this journey.

Loki has had some health difficulties during our time together; he was diagnosed with puppy strangles a few weeks in and went through several rounds of prednisone before that finally resolved. After that settled down, I discovered a lump on the left side of his forehead, which I originally chalked up to the strangles but now seems to be a separate issue. An x-ray revealed very little, except that it is cause for concern. Harriet and I took him to see a specialist at Animal Medical Center. They want to do a biopsy and a CT scan as they believe there is a chance it could be something more serious; possibly a fungal infection, or cancer. Or maybe not! But we won't know until we get in there.

Unfortunately the estimate is $2,445. We have raised $350 so far. Loki continues to be under the care of Red Hook Dog Rescue, but that amount far outstrips their financial capacity, especially as they have many other special-needs dogs to care for. Loki is only 10 months old and we want him to have a long, happy, healthy life! Anything you can contribute toward this vet bill would be incredibly helpful. All donations are going to Red Hook Dog Rescue, a 501c3 nonprofit, and are therefore tax-deductible. I will post updates about Loki's journey and progress along the way!
