I have been around the disease of addiction my entire life, if you shake the family tree we are scattered everywhere. A while ago I was fortunate enough to have figured out that my life would be infinitely better in active recovery. Along the way I made a few friends and tried to help a few people. Sometimes it worked and sometimes it didn’t, but the intent was always pure. About 10 years ago I had a friend who was in a bad way, and they went to Caron in Wernersville, Pennsylvania and came back completely transformed. I took notice and saw that there were a lot of friends who had gone there and some that would go there. As time passed, I got to know Caron even more intimately by spending time with folks in the New York office and I got to see firsthand the intelligence, compassion, and hard work that they demonstrate with patients suffering from the disease of addiction. I believe strongly that nobody has a monopoly on this work, we are all just doing the best we can. I was so impressed in fact that I started working at Caron in their New York office back in October.

The Leadville Trail 100 is an ultramarathon that takes place annually in Leadville Colorado, you have 30 hours to complete the 100-mile course that consists of 16,000 feet of vertical climbing with elevations ranging from 9,200 feet to 12,600. The Leadville 100 is a race that has eluded me twice. Twice I have trained hard and twice I have failed to finish. As I was going through the training the first time around my good friend said to me - ‘enjoy the journey of getting to the starting line, that’s the part that really matters’ .. I began to think about it, and he was absolutely correct. I finished my first 100-mile race last summer (in Steamboat Springs, CO) and I know for a fact that I will be as prepared as ever this August when I attempt to finish Leadville. But more than anything, I can say I will enjoy getting to the starting line. Sobriety to me is very analogous, stay on the path and even if you don’t always get where you are trying to go in life, as long as you stay in the light then all will be ok.

Caron is a non-profit, so every dollar we raise goes towards the mission of helping as many people as possible. Last year, Caron gave away over $5 million in charity care for those that can’t afford treatment.

Jesse Hill Scholarship Fund
Jesse Jonathan Hill was a kind, loving, and genuine person. His distinctive ear-to-ear smile could brighten a room and put you at ease, his shoulder was always there to lean on, and his ears were always available to listen. But while Jesse was always the rock in our lives, he, like so many in this world, had trouble expressing his personal struggles to those who loved him most. To cope with his pain, Jesse slowly slipped into a prescription painkiller addiction, which was followed by a deep depression. Tragically, Jesse lost his battle with addiction and depression and, in a last-ditch effort to end his ongoing pain, took his own life on October 30, 2012.

In remembrance of Jesse’s life, we began the Jesse Hill Memorial Wiffle Ball Tournament to increase awareness and raise funds to prevent addiction, depression and suicide. This year, all proceeds will be donated to Caron Treatment Center's, My Recovery Connection (formerly My First Year) Program. The My Recovery Connection Program provides personalized aftercare to individuals as they begin their first steps in recovery post-treatment, including guidance, coaching, support, and accountability to both patients and their families.

Over the past 10 years we have raised a $28,410. This year we are hoping to break the $30,000 mark.

In Memory of Colleen Cusack McBride
Every year thousands of women from all walks of life die from drug and alcohol related causes in the United States. After years of losing the struggle against alcohol and drug addiction, our mother, Colleen Ann McBride (Cusack), died June 11th, 2015. Help us raise funds for women's recovery programs at Caron Treatment Centers so another family may not have to face the same loss.
April 8th would have been our mother’s 58th birthday. While we continue to move forward through our grief, we know our mother at her best loved to help others. We want to help others as well, by raising funds till the one year anniversary of her death, June 11th, to donate towards women’s recovery efforts at Caron Treatment Centers.

Our mother was a good woman who long had been losing the battle to addiction. Her disease robbed her of so much, including her ability to be present as a mother, her ability to be present as a grandmother, her social connections, and many years from her life. Her disease robbed my brothers and I of a chance at a stable home, a present mother, and robbed her grandkids of a present grandmother.
Even with the loss of our mother to addiction, we know recovery is possible. Millions of alcoholics and addicts get and stay sober. We want to help.

Help us collect the funds to give other women a chance to be freed of the disease of addiction. We recognize it is a disease, and there is treatment.
Approximately 22.5 million Americans meet the medical criteria for addiction.

Women are often impacted by the disease of addiction differently than men. Males are more likely to act out or get in trouble with the law. As a result, they often enter treatment earlier in life than females. Additionally, depending on their responsibilities, women may delay treatment. As a mother, they may not want to be away from small children or they may fear losing custody of a child if they seek help for their disease.

Caron’s program for women treats each family individually and focuses on recovery by working through the disease and any underlying issues. Dedicated professionals look at who the person is and how that relates to the roles they play and the hats they wear (professional, parent, spouse, adult, and child). Caron meets families where they are in life and helps them with the tools and practices that will get them on the path to recovery.
