The Rogers City Area Senior and Community Center faces closure without your help!

August 31st has been established as the deadline date for raising the funds to begin the necessary work needed to keep the building open. The Main Hall membrane roof has failed. The metal b-decking is rusted all the way through in spots. Water has made its way into the building and is causing interior damage to insulation and ceiling tiles. To make matters worse the main hall heating system has been red-tagged. The HVAC system could take approximately fourteen weeks to receive after being ordered. That pushes the project into the less than ideal construction period of November/December. The sooner we accumulate enough donations to order equipment, materials, and can get started, the better.

The projected cost for complete replacement of the roof (including the metal b-decking) and the HVAC system has been rounded up to 400K to help cover the additional costs of permits, inspections, replacement of unusable ceiling tiles and insulation, etc. To date, the Rogers City Area Senior and Community Center (RCASCC) has acquired 223K between loans, grants, and donations. We still desperately need your help.

Rogers City Area Seniors, Inc. is a 501c3 non-profit community organization providing services to Rogers City and surrounding areas. Closure of the center would mean that the following services, programs, events and activities would no longer be facilitated through the Rogers City Area Senior and Community Center: Medical Equipment Loan Closet, Low Income Subsidy Application Assistance for Medicare/Medicaid, Extra Help Application Assistance for Medicare Drug Coverage, Community Service Location, MI Works Volunteer Location, NEMCSA Retired Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP) Station, Yarn Crafting Group, Euchre Card Playing, Spitzer Card Playing, Bingo, Socialization, Free will donation Light Lunch on Wednesday (pizza/coffee/water), Food Pantry open M-F 10-3pm, Low Impact Exercise Class, Golden Groceries (Senior Commodities) Distribution, Drive-thru Food Distributions (warmer months), CodeRed Alert Sign Up Location, Borrow-A-Book (donated books, puzzles, games), Covid-19 Testing Kit & Masks Distribution, Blood Pressure Clinics, Lifeline Preventative Health Screenings, Diabetes Education Series (in-person), Health Series Webinar Viewing Location, Incontinence Products Pantry (mens/womens donated products), Women’s Feminine Hygiene/ Incontinence Product Pantry, MMAP counseling, MMAP counseling station, MMAP New to Medicare Webinar Viewing Location, location for Community Resources Information, Arts & Craft Show. Plus our participation in Community Events: Cocoa Crawl, Art Walk/Mural Festival, and hosting Craft Classes will stop. Did you know that Project Connect partners with us to order the FBEM Food Trucks for two of their events or that we have offered a FREE CPR, AED, Abdominal thrusts, Narcan & Epipen administration training? It will all end.

The building has a Licensed Kitchen that aside from our past use for Congregate Meals, serves as a Business Incubator for the food service industry. The center also makes available the facilities for community use i.e. Versiti Blood Drives, non-profit Group Fundraising, Vaccination Clinics, Medication Disposal Events, Public Health Outreach Programs, Boys and Girls Scout gatherings, Public Meeting Space at no-cost during operating hours, WiFi usage available while open, Special Interest Classes, Rentals for Graduations, Reunions, Memorials, Baby Showers and Wedding events to name just a few uses.

Looking for a way to help? It goes without saying that monetary donations are a top priority. Spreading awareness about our dire situation and following it up with your personal stories helps in ways that money cannot. Share the GoFundMe link to our fundraiser on your social media pages or email your contacts list. Flyers will need to be distributed. Positive letters to news outlets will help keep our story at the top of the pile. If you have any connections that you think may help, let us know. We have reached out to contractors, manufacturers, the City of Rogers City, County Commissioners, corporations, businesses, applied for grants, and even approached some of Michigan’s top donors for senior centers! We will explore every avenue.
