#SetTheExpectation
As a society, we hear a lot about men being the problem. However, I don’t believe we can talk about men as the problem unless we are also willing to talk about them as the solution.
#SetTheExpectation is a campaign that engages male athletes and their coaches as the solution. Through education, men’s engagement and raising awareness, I believe we can make our campuses and surrounding communities safer for everyone.
Last month I visited Michigan Football. At the time the media was overrun with multiple news stories of sexual abuse and domestic violence coming out of Ohio State and as an advocate, I was feeling somewhat defeated, but after sharing my story and my pain, I left the team room that day feeling encouraged and inspired.
Shortly after my visit, Coach Harbaugh texted me and asked me to act as an honorary captain at this weeks game against Western Michigan. I enthusiastically accepted the invitation.
All over the country, I ask football programs to use their platform and influence to affect change on their campus and in their communities and now I would like to us that platform and the power of the #SetTheExpectation campaign to give back.
I am honored to act as an honorary captain at this week’s game and I would like to take this opportunity to help survivors in Ann Arbor and Washtenaw county by fundraising for SafeHouse Center.
SafeHouse Center provides support for those impacted by domestic violence or sexual assault and provides free and confidential services for any person victimized that lives or works in Washtenaw County. Their services include emergency shelter for those in danger of being hurt or killed, counseling, legal advocacy, and support groups.
SafeHouse Center depends on donations and due to limited government assistance they are responsible for 70% of their own funding. Let’s help them not only meet their funding requirement, but go above and beyond it.
Tens of thousands of Michigan fans will fill the stadium this weekend. Imagine the impact we could make if we all donated what we could - even if it was just $5, imagine the lives that could be helped and saved. All of the money raised on this campaign will go directly to SafeHouse Center and their programs.
We’ve all seen the scandals in the media involving football programs, players and coaches. Let’s change the narrative. Let’s use the power of sports and Michigan Football to make a difference. Let’s #SetTheExpectation and give back.
Thank you for your support.
