Bike Fleet for Disadvantaged Youths
The Basics:
Bike SLO County needs your help to acquire a fleet of bikes to make sure that every kid in SLO County schools (regardless of their family's income level) gets a chance to experience the joys of riding a bike at an early age.
The Details:
A big part of Bike SLO County's mission is to educate SLO County residents about how to bike safe and smart. One of the ways we do that is by traveling to elementary schools countywide to provide inclusive classroom and on-bike safety and skills education.
Unfortunately experience has shown that some families can't afford to provide bikes for their kids to participate in on-bike education or to participate in Bike Rodeos, meaning many of those kids may not ever experience their first ride on a bike.
With this in mind, Bike SLO County reached out to Trek Bikes seeking assistance to obtain a fleet of thirty kids bikes which we can use to make sure that we're able to include all SLO County children in on-bike education.
Trek and local SLO County partner Foothill Cyclery stepped up and offered us a great, below retail deal on 30 brand new Trek kids' bicycles. Bike SLO County will receive those bikes on Wednesday, August 23rd at Foothill Cyclery and Bike SLO County staff will help Foothill Cyclery assemble the bikes in an epic bike-build-a-thon.
We're asking for your help to raise $4,650 in the next two weeks so that we can pay for what will be our costs for the bikes. Your donations today will make a life-long difference in the lives of some SLO County's most disadvantaged young people.
Thank you!

The Detailed Details:
Bike SLO County is working in conjunction with the San Luis Obispo Council of Governments’ Safe Routes to School program to provide inclusive classroom and on-bike safety and skills education to elementary school children throughout SLO County over a three-year pilot program. Under the program, Bike SLO County will provide targeted instruction aligned with Common Core Standards in three SLO County schools (Lillian Larsen; Oceano Elementary and Nipomo Elementary) which have been identified as serving disadvantaged communities. The classes will be integrated into the curriculum as a supplemental resource emphasizing the importance of physical activity.
Additionally, Bike SLO County will provide ongoing bike education to include assembly and classroom instruction and Bike Rodeos to all elementary schools in SLO County. Bike SLO County has already had tremendous success with this format working with the San Luis Obispo County Health Department. In the first six months of 2017 alone, Bike SLO County has provided instruction to 5000 children, 1000 of whom participated in our on-bike Rodeos.
The fleet of kid's bikes from Trek and Foothill Cyclery will make sure that all SLO County elementary school children get a chance to experience the joy of riding a bike while learning to ride safe and smart.
