Sanchez Art Center

The Pacifica Murals Project is a collective of local artists with the intent to paint four murals at the North Pumphouse Building at Linda Mar Beach (Pacifica State Beach), where beach visitors have access to public bathrooms and showers. It is our goal to raise $25k to make our dream of “The Four Directions” a reality. Each mural primed, painted, and sealed costs roughly $6k. All donations will be used to fund the four public murals.

The Pacifica Murals Project’s mission is to strengthen community through art. The four part mural series “The Four Directions” will be a welcoming symbol of diversity & inclusivity, community, and a reminder to not forget all that we have learned from this past year from the injustices and tragedies caused by systemic racism, climate change and illness. This project is aimed at facilitating deeper thoughts and healing conversations about our native history, the well-being of ourselves, each other, and our shared environment.

These murals pay respect to Mother Nature, inspiring youth climate/social justice activists, and our shared experiences through the stages and cycles of life. The “Four Directions” is a marker in present time, after an historic and grueling past year, that asks us to pause for a moment to reflect, shed that does not serve us, and move forward with a renewed sense of focus on what matters most.

Each wall of the public building faces a direction head on, and thus naturally connects and relates to the four cardinal directions. Each wall (or direction) has been designated to a local artist, and each artist has drafted a mural inspired by its direction and its symbolism to her or him, and the several Native American cultures who regard each direction as sacred. “The Four Directions” mural series was conceptualized by Danielle Gustavson, a Pacifica based painter, who has Indigenous American heritage from Mesoamerica. She and “The Four Directions” is supported and lifted up by the art and concepts given by artists: Jeffrey Wong (North Mural), Jason Budowski (South Mural) and Robert Louthan (West Mural). Together all four artists and their coinciding murals honor the Four Directions that embody unity in diversity, and celebrate our interconnection to each other and our environment.
