Finishing the Lawn Bowling Facility
Help us roll out a new era for the Sarasota Lawn Bowling Club!
Our mission is to complete our new lawn bowling facility at the Bobby Jones Golf Course in Sarasota. The club requires additional funding for equipment storage, utilities, restrooms, fencing, and sidewalks. These amenities are crucial to the health, safety, and enjoyment of the facilities for all of the participants.
After a two-year closure, the Sarasota Lawn Bowling Club is anticipating bowling again this fall. The almost 100 year old club's two bowling greens have been closed since the City of Sarasota requested that the club vacate their former premises in the fall of 2022 to make way for the Bayfront Project.
The club received a generous donation from the Gulf Coast Community Foundation, and has been able to construct one new bowling green. Unfortunately, due the City moving the club to a corner of the golf course with no existing infrastructure, and unforeseen construction delays, the funds are no longer sufficient to complete the facility.
Since opening in 1927, the lawn bowling club has provided adult members and visitors, as well as school-aged children with affordable, healthy, low-impact exercise, and important social opportunities. The club provides equipment for those with strength and mobility issues, making this activity accessible to most. The Sarasota Lawn Bowling Club is also well-known for hosting important regional tournaments with exciting, high-level competition.
Lawn bowling is a sport that has been around for centuries. It is played on a perfectly level 120' square grass green. Participants of all ages and abilities compete to get their team's bowls closer to the target ball than the opposition's bowls. What makes lawn bowling so unique is that the bowls are manufactured to "curl" as they roll down the green towards the target! Lawn bowling is easy to learn, but can be challenging to master.
We are working hard on fundraising and planning the opening of the new facility, and a new era for the Sarasota Lawn Bowling Club starting this fall! Your kind donation will ensure that this sport and social club will once again be a vital part of the community.
