Help Restore Ocean Beach Clock Tower
The Light Tower in the parking lot is very similar to the original Clock Tower that was on the cement foundation on the Boardwalk. As you look at the Light Tower in the Parking Lot, the entire section is exactly similar (but a little smaller) than the original Clock Tower Base.
The Original Clock Tower was supposed to be taken down and repaired and put back up based on a 1988 engineering study by Torello Engineers in Essex, CT but the Clock Tower was destroyed because the crane was too small to pick it up. This happened around 1989-1991 time frame and the Save Ocean Beach group was not in existence at that time. It was not determined why the city did not sue the crane operator for damages, but the Clock Tower was lost along with it a piece of history at the park.
The Save Ocean Beach Group in 2011, were looking at a cost-effective way to replace the Clock Tower on the Boardwalk and the re-use and recycle of Light Tower was a very good answer. The cost is a big factor, and to raise funds for a brand new tower installed and to complete it the way it was with the clocks, lighting, mast, new foundation would be over $1 Million Dollars. We would not be able to raise that amount of money and the public would probably rather see the money put to use for other things.
We are looking to fundraise some funds to be able to complete this project at a more cost effective option.
We appreciate all of your donations to help complete this much needed project.
Sincerely,
Jeff Mullen
