Theatre is the heart of every community. The stories we tell, the worlds we create together. I have a story I want to tell, and I'm hoping you'll help me!
5 years ago, I met Madeline (Maddie) Hill when she was 14. I directed her in a production at Scoundrel and Scamp Theatre in Tucson. She also participated in the Scamp acting classes I taught that year. I had tasked her with writing a monologue for the production we were working on. Her words blew me away. The wit, the wisdom, the talent. I encouraged her to submit for Live Theatre Workshop's Young Playwright Competition.
Maddie is funny and sensitive and bold and unapologetically herself. When I first met her, she came out as trans to our cast and to her community, and I was never more proud of a person choosing to live their true selves.
Being trans doesn't make her special in that regard, but it does add to her creativity, her drive, and her overall understanding of how the world works.
In 2022, her play Everything You've Got was produced as part of that contest. I had the honor of directing. The writing truly made me stop and catch my breath. It's that good. Only a 15-minute short play, over the last 3 years, I've mentored Maddie and worked with her on developing that piece into a full-length play.

And now, through the incredible generosity of The Scoundrel and Scamp Theatre, where Maddie and I first met, we will be producing a fully staged version of Everything You've Got.
I not only have the honor of being the producer, but I'm also going to be acting in it, bringing her incredible words to life. I believe in this production so much that I'm donating both my producer and acting honorariums to offset the cost of the production.
If you love theatre, if you are a trans ally, if you love Maddie, or me, or the 1982 show Cheers, or one-woman shows, or hearing incredible words strewn together into a story soup that will blow you away... I hope you'll consider contributing to this fundraiser to help bring it to life!
