Sheltering Tree Benson Project
Welcome and thank you for your interest in our community.
Sheltering Tree builds affordable housing communities for special needs adults to pursue their hopes and dreams.
We believe that each individual represents enormous potential and unexplored talents, interests, and abilities. Because of this, Sheltering Tree will shape services not just around the needs of individuals served, but also their hopes and dreams, identifying long term goals and creating a road map to address barriers and cultivate meaningful, lifelong development toward indepedence.
Sheltering Tree believes that all people have the right to enjoy a self-determined and happy adult life.
With that said, Sheltering Tree has one community, 10 residents, all men, located in Bellevue, NE across from Stellas on Gregg Road. Phase 2 is on the cusp of starting on the edge of the Marian High School campus in the Benson neighborhood of Omaha, NE. This project will be a 20 resident facility that will have one wing of ladies and one wing of men. All with varying degrees of developmental disabilities who otherwise would have been on a 7-10 year waiting list.
After losing a grant that had been in work from a (unnamed) bank for almost $450,000, the parents of the selected residents for the Benson Project pledged almost 70% of that gap over the next three years while other investors filled the rest... in 6 days! God is awesome! The problem lies in the burden this now places on the parents who may be less able to make this kind of commitment. This campaign is designed to lessen the burden on the parents of these special adults while ensuring that they can not only complete the Benson project on time, but begin the process of building towards phase 3 - Sarpy County, NE. Any amount would be appreciated and is tax deductable as Sheltering Tree is a non-profit as covered under NE Tax Exempt law and with a for 501(c)3 available. We ask for your support in providing a safe, independant environment for these men and women with special needs. Thank you so much, and God Bless you.
