CAT 5 Hurricane Community Animal Shelter
HURRICANE IAN WREAKS HAVOC
On September 28th, Hurricane Ian made landfall in southwest Florida as a powerful Category 4 hurricane. 150 mph winds and rain ravaged the coastline for hours, causing catastrophic destruction to homes, schools, and businesses around the greater Naples community that we call home. 2.5 million Floridians were without power, 2,500 people needed rescue, and more than 100 people lost their lives.
SHY WOLF SANCTUARY RESPONDS
Our staff and volunteers rallied to prepare the sanctuary for the storm and respond to emergency rescue requests. While our property was damaged by downed trees and our water pump went out, we are grateful that the impact of Ian was not worse for us.

PREPARING FOR THE NEXT STORM
While south Florida is still reeling from Ian, we have our eye on the future, knowing it's not a matter of IF the next storm will hit but WHEN. The most responsible thing we can do right now is to prepare for the next storm - to protect animal and human lives.
To that end, Shy Wolf Sanctuary is raising funds right now to jumpstart the construct of a CAT 5 hurricane shelter on our new 17-acre property as part of our SANCTUARY FOR ALL Campaign. This first-of-its-kind shelter will house all of Shy Wolf residents but also the pets of first responders and the pets of community members forced to evacuate in the face of disaster. The CAT 5 shelter is our first and most urgent priority, and we are looking to the crowd to help us supplement other forms of public and private fundraising.

The 10,000-square-foot shelter will:
- Feature a large open warehouse-style floorplan, in which temporary kennels can be constructed to accommodate animals of various sizes
- Be constructed to withstand CAT 5 hurricane winds and minimize the threat of flooding
- Have the ability to operate by generator for an extended period in a power outage
- Include a dedicated animal food preparation area with commercial coolers and freezers for food storage
- Include a loading dock for ease of animal food delivery and to allow commercial catering for events that may be hosted in the building when not used as a shelter
- Be an ongoing resource to house pets of community members recovering from a storm
- Serve as an entertainment venue for community events
