Mission statement: South Florida Youth Symphony is a visionary musical organization using individual and ensemble music to transform the lives of all children, providing essential scholarships to students to enable teaching the importance of self-discipline, focused teamwork, self-confidence, and instilling the value of social responsibility and collaboration. More than classic music instruction, SFYS programs promote the development of executive functioning skills that are foundational building blocks for overall educational successful futures.
Historical:
Now in the 60th ( Jubilee) season, the South Florida Youth Symphony works with over 250 students a season, offering training classes and orchestra ensembles, performing over 5 community concerts each season, and providing for summer music camp programs for local low-income, underserved and special needs children.
The program is operated in northwest Miami-Dade County with the sponsorship of Miami Dade College North Campus. All children and youth are welcome without regard to race, religion, orientation, gender or economic status. There is over $75,000 in tuition, camp and instrument usage scholarships awarded to our youth each year, through the generous help of many sponsors and supporters.
Many students begin with the SFYS when they are 3 & 4 years of age, and remain in the program progressing through the system until reaching the “Flagship” Youth Symphony. Students range in age from 3 years to 23.
Over 6,000 students have come through the Sunday program to become musicians, teachers, performers and directors in our local south Florida community as well nationally.
The SFYS celebrates the honors of winning of top gold medals for festival competition performances, performed on the stage of Carnegie Hall New York, Secured the Gold overall orchestra Award at the Prague Bohemia Youth Music Festival in 2019, performed a three - city concert tour in Italy in 2023, and a brilliant side-by-side concert with the Funsicopa Youth Philharmonic in Panama during March 2024.
During the Covid Pandemic in June 2020, the SFYS developed three virtual concerts, working with students weekly on the Zoom platform. The 3rd concert was submitted to the Suncoast Chapter of the Emmy’s, and won the awards in two categories.
Funds raised will directly be applied to the scholarships for deserving youth musicians, to be able to participate in the life experience of being a musician, teacher or musical ambassador in and from south Florida to destinations world wide!
