Donations for South Sudan Life Care Mission 2020
My name is Meira Kowalski, and I am a current senior in the IB Program at St. Petersburg High School in St. Petersburg, Florida. For nearly five years, I have partnered with Joseph Deng, a practicing nurse in Tarpon Springs and a former Lost Boy of Sudan. Each year, Joseph travels to his rural village of Panliet, South Sudan to deliver over the counter medications to those in need with his organization South Sudan Life Care Mission (SSLCM). After interviewing Joseph Deng for a documentary on the Lost Boys of Sudan in eighth grade, (click here to watch this documentary), I felt an indescribable compulsion to assist him in helping the world around him. Joseph and I have had a special relationship since then, and with your support, I would like to support Joseph's trip once more before going off to Vanderbilt University in the fall.
Since meeting Joseph five years ago, I have hosted nine different medical drives and three separate GoFundMe pages to support four of Joseph's trips to South Sudan. Most of the medical drives have taken place at local facilities and schools, such as Terrace Community Middle School, Academy of the Holy Names, St. Petersburg High School, and Temple Beth-El, and funds have been raised on GoFundMe and through local organizations. Last year alone, Joseph was able to bring approximately 500 pounds of medicine to his village. Additionally, because of donations from supporters like you, he was able to begin the construction of a functional, insulated clinic for his organization last October. In total, I have been able to independently raise over $14,000 and 1,200 pounds of medications for this worthy cause. In South Sudan, one bottle of Immodium has the potential to save five lives, and because of heroes like Joseph, those who are less fortunate are getting the aid they desperately require.
Joseph is planning on traveling to South Sudan once more this May. Currently, we have several schools and facilities preparing to host medical drives to raise the necessary over the counter medications to support the trip. However, Joseph will be requiring $3,000 to cover the shipping costs of these medications. He also hopes to finish the painting/windows for the clinic and purchase a generator to store all of the medications, which will allow the clinic to be functional year-round. All donations past those required for shipping will be used to support these goals, which will cost approximately $50,000 in total. Over the last five years, I have greatly appreciated all of your support, and I hope we can make this the best year yet. Please help and donate to this cause so thousands of South Sudanese citizens get the medical attention they need to see another day. Thank you!
