Specially Fit Foundation

Dear Friends and Supporters, On October 9, 2024, Hurricane Milton swept through our community, changing everything in its path. The Specially Fit Foundation, which has been devoted to providing support for individuals with developmental disabilities, now faces a challenge we never could have anticipated. so now we are asking for your help.

As a result of the hurricane, one of our licensed group homes in Tampa—home to six incredible special needs residents— was severely damaged. The winds tore off most of the roof, letting water in and causing extensive mold damage. These residents lost clothing, electronics, personal items, and medical equipment. The house, once a sanctuary of safety and stability, is now unrecognizable & uninhabitable.

For the moment, our residents have been displaced to temporary Airbnb locations. Understanding and accepting the loss of nearly all their clothes, shoes, gaming systems, and other sentimental items has a been extremely difficult for our residents, but most importantly they’re longing to get back together under one roof, the way they’ve always lived—like a family. On top of this, several of our other homes also sustained damage.

A tree destroyed the ADA-compliant ramp at one location, and another blocks a crucial fire evacuation area. We are working tirelessly to secure repairs, but the costs are mounting—emergency housing, restoration, replacing essentials like beds and clothing—it's overwhelming.
