Abaco Outreach is a nonprofit that has been created specifically to help those in the Abaco Islands of the Bahamas who are affected by the devastation of Hurricane Dorian. Abaco Outreach has assembled parties that share a love for these beautiful islands and who will be effective partners in the relief and rebuilding effort. These partners include SBP: Disaster Resilience and Recovery (https://sbpusa.org/), Chub Cay, various parties providing marine and air transportation, and others. The Abacos were virtually decimated when the eye of the storm made direct landfall.  Our founder and frequent Bahamian spearfisherman, David Ducote, has an intimate knowledge of the islands themselves and their immediate and future needs. David believes his knowledge of the area and his relationship with charitable partners will help these Bahamian citizens in the short term relief and the rebuilding of the Abacos. Immediate funds will go directly to the purchase of supplies and their delivery. Such items include solar generators, chainsaws, medical supplies, satellite phones, food, gasoline and gas cans, desalination units, and more. The first round of supplies was brought to Abaco Outreach's base at Chub Cay on the third day after the storm hit and was distributed to critical areas. Upon arrival and assessment of the situation and the citizen's most immediate needs, Abaco Outreach allocated funds where they could have the most impact. This included direct relief from Abaco Outreach and our partner, SBP as well as funding nonprofit activities by parties that can most effectively provide aid. Abaco Outreach has a pending 501c3. So far, we have moved over 27 tons of supplies to those who need it and will continue to do so in the coming weeks.

Dorian made landfall across the islands of Abaco and Grand Bahama as a category five (5) hurricane with sustained winds of 185 mph and a catastrophic storm-surge between 15’ and 20’ creating devastation, taking lives and displacing thousands in the affected islands and their surrounding Cays.

In Grand Bahama, the storm has significantly impacted the ability of the Rand Memorial Hospital to provide care to the more than 55,000+ residents and visitors to the island and its surrounding cays. The hospital will require continuing restoration efforts, as all hospital systems, infrastructure and major hospital equipment has been impacted by the flooding associated with Hurricane Dorian. Tragically for the residents of these Grand Bahama communities, in addition to the storm damage sustained at the Rand Memorial Hospital, the Pelican Point and High Rock clinics were completely destroyed; and McCleans Town Clinic sustained significant roof damage, requiring weeks of repairs.

As the PHA begins to transition from recovery to restoration, we are appealing to our partners for assistance.
