Distressed Farmers Relief Fund
Who are we? What are we doing?
We are from Telangana Development Forum (TDF-USA), a non-profit 501(c) organization. TDF JAI KISAN team, a sub-team under TDF-USA, is out on a mission to assess and improve the living conditions of farmers in Telangana.
We are glad to let you know that we successfully completed the Phase- I of our initial project wherein we lent an immediate hand to the families of the farmers who have committed suicide in the recent past. Thanks to the generosity of many NRIs, we extended financial support ( Rs. 10000 per family) to 21 families across Mahaboobnagar, Nalgonda, Warangal and Medak districts, and also Rs. 25000 to a lady farmer who attempted suicide in Karimnagar district. Efforts are on to extend this project to the districts of Karimnagar and Adilabad as well. We hope that the monetary help that we offered would assist the families in meeting their immediate needs. The success of this project has given us an impetus to move ahead with enhanced commitment to carry out the other programmes of the JAI KISAN Project. Next in line comes ‘Model Farming’.
What is Model Farming Project?
Majority of the farmers in Telangana follow conventional farming methods, which are dependent on ideal farming conditions like fertile soil, minerals and abundance of water. The result is a disappointing yield and added burden of the debt procured for cultivation. This pathetic situation discourages many farmers and as a result some farmers are forced to migrate to cities, while some resort to extreme measures like committing suicide.
Under the able guidance of agricultural intellects and officers concerned, TDF JAI KISAN team is endeavouring to reach out to needy farmers in Telangana, and help them by educating them in the latest and most ideal methods of farming. Under “JaiKisan - Model Farming Project”, we propose to support around 225 farmers (100 in Khammam, 75 in Mahaboobnagar and 50 in Nalgonda) who are working under Central Government's Paramparagat Krishi Vikas Yojana (PKVY) project. The Subsidy team intends to support 100+ farmers in Mahaboobnagar and Warangal districts.
How is the program carried out?
Farmers are identified with the help of local volunteers and Agricultural Officers. The commitment of the farmer, his/her financial status, educational status, location are some of the factors that influence the selection of farmers for model farming project.
We educate the identified farmers in the best farming practices such as using technology in developing new cropping patterns, organic farming, reducing the farming input cost and
following economically and ecologically sustainable farming model. We also encourage farmers form to cooperative societies so that they can sell their own products profitably, without the involvement of middlemen.
Currently there are more than 30 members in the JAI KISAN team, which comprises 10 sub-teams: 4 organic farming teams, a red gram transplantation team, a subsidy team, a documentation team, a finance team, a promotion team, a fundraising team, a coordination team, an awareness team and a social media team. Each team plays a crucial role in the smooth functioning of the project. All teams work in coordination and the multiple streams of work have begun parallel, like collecting the farmer data, knowing the practices followed during the kharif season, trying to gauge the gaps in practices, coordinating with agricultural officers and trying to bridge the gaps using modern, viable techniques in agriculture.
How can you help?
“My grandfather used to say that once in your life you need a doctor, a lawyer, a policeman and a preacher, but every day, three times a day, you NEED a farmer.”
