LOVE IS A BLUE TICK HOUND
PROJECT BLUE TICK at Terrific New Theatre is an important collaboration celebrating Alabama's most exciting new playwright, Audrey Cefaly, a major new voice in American theatre.
IT'S HAPPENING!
So many of you have already shown an interest in PROJECT BLUE TICK at Birmingham's Terrific New Theatre (TNT) on Dec 8-17, 2016. We are proud to inaugurate TNT's new Project W.I.T.S. (Writers in the South) series with the world premiere of Cefaly’s award-winning collection LOVE IS A BLUE TICK HOUND in her home state of Alabama.
THE BUZZ
The short pieces that make up this evening of theater have won numerous awards and led to critical acclaim at a national level. Most notable is THE GULF, which won last year's Samuel French Off Off Broadway Short Play Festival. The play was then adapted into a full-length piece (recipient of the coveted Edgerton Foundation New Play Award and is now receiving its world premiere at TONY Award winning Signature Theatre in Washington, DC. Several of the pieces have also been published in Best American Short Plays, and three of them have won New York festivals.
Audrey is on a journey to bring the rich stories of her native Alabama into the light. She is telling stories of heartache and hope, of love and loss, giving a voice to the underrepresented. Her work has been described as “unflinchingly honest,” “spare,” “compassionate,” “richly-layered,” and “soulful,” and she has been called “a force of nature,” "the new voice of the South,” and "one of America's brilliant emerging theatre leaders."
NYC knows Audrey, Washington DC knows Audrey... IT'S TIME TO BRING AUDREY HOME!
How Did We Get Here?
In 2015, Audrey’s play THE GULF was chosen from thousands of submissions to take part in the Annual Samuel French Off Off Broadway Short Play Festival. A team of Alabama artists was assembled to travel to New York and compete. Along the way, TEAM GULF—an ever-growing legion of followers who believe in Audrey's work—rallied together to support the production. THE GULF was named a winner of the festival and Alabama supporters Sandra Taylor and Jim Gordy ("Team Bama") were there in person to share in the success. By the time Team Bama left New York, a plan was already in motion to bring Audrey’s work home.
Team Bama began negotiations with Audrey and Samuel French to produce the WORLD PREMIERE of her best shorts plays—all under one roof—for a full evening of theater. Once we found our Alabama home at Terrific New Theatre in Birmingham and secured a generous grant from The Alabama State Council on the Arts and The National Endowment for the Arts, PROJECT BLUE TICK was born.
PROJECT BLUE TICK
Those of you who support local theater and the arts in schools and who also believe in Audrey's writing, as we do, know that her work deserves to be seen. Our artists and designers are traveling from three states to gather in Birmingham in November for four weeks of workshops with local high schools and universities, meetings, rehearsals, talkbacks and of course, the production itself. Your donation reaches far beyond that of a great night of theater. You will play a vital role in introducing Audrey’s work to her home state of Alabama and supporting important educational outreach. Please take a moment and make a donation to PROJECT BLUE TICK. Your tax deductible contribution will cover travel expenses, rehearsal space, and production costs. We are aiming to match the generous grant from the Alabama State Council on the Arts.
That’s $6,000!!! And we’ve got less than six weeks to raise it. Come join us!
