The Auburn Food Bank

Dear Friends!

The Auburn Food Bank traces its roots back to the 1930s when a family was burned out of their home and the neighbors gather food and furniture to help them rebuild. When this family was resettled, supplies were left over. The neighborhood decided to keep what they had for another opportunity to help a neighbor in need. From this came The Auburn Community Chest which has morphed into The Auburn Food Bank and the work that started so long ago is continuing today – helping our neighbors!

Our mission is to provide food, referrals and emergency assistance to those in need.

We have been supporting this work in a 1,200-square-foot space for over 30 years – and have been busting at the seams for over 17 years. We have utilized warehouse space and “outside space” for our food storage. We handle food about 5 times before it makes it out to the client. This has been and is inefficient. We have looked for other space to no avail….UNTIL….The City of Auburn leased out a small strip mall and we were able to sublease a 6,600-square-foot space for the food bank! How exciting! We can have everything in one spot! And not just the food bank, but we are partnering with many other non-profits to provide a “one-stop shop” sort of place so many services can be accessed and a “warm hand-off” can happen between agencies for our client's support!

We have saved money, we have written for grants, we have bet on the economy being better coming out of covid – and we were wrong! We are short funding – and need help!

Because this is a “remodel,” the bank loans don’t work as there is no asset if we can’t make it! We KNOW we can make it monthly --- we are just stuck right now getting the rest of what we need to finish the project. All the product prices went up after Covid and then the large minimum wage increase – pushed labor up. We still need 1 MILLION dollars.

While that SOUNDS huge – and it is – it’s also doable!

This food bank and staff have “answered the call” every time. Whatever the need, whatever the situation, we have done our very best to step up and solve the need. We can’t do this one without some major help.

We need to move --- no question about that……
