The Campaign Against Hunger

Being unable to afford a turkey for one's family on Thanksgiving is a painful experience, and an all-too-common reality for America's hungry, 50% of whom are children. Project Turkey aims to rectify this situation. By choosing one of New York City's largest food pantries serving some of NYC's hardest-hit neighborhoods (BedStuy/Brownsville/East New York), we strive to provide enough turkeys this Thanksgiving so that no New Yorkers are turned away hungry from The Campaign Against Hunger (a 501-c-3 that feeds hundreds of families each day).

To accomplish this, we aim to purchase at least 500 turkeys, at a cost of roughly $15 each, and thus raise at least $7,500 by the holiday. As always, 100% of money received by the Campaign will be used to purchase turkeys, and 0% will be used for overhead. Thanks to your help, we have raised over $120,000 over the last five years alone.

More than ever, the food demand has skyrocketed, bringing in a flood of new people who had never visited a food pantry before (40% of recipients in recent years had never visited a food pantry before). In 2022 alone, the Campaign Against Hunger served 330,000 families and distributed 8.6 million meals, while building over 250 partners to help with distribution.

And now, Thanksgiving is looming.

If you choose to donate $15, it would make one family very happy.

Since 2011, Project Oatmeal has raised more than $125,000 and purchased over 720,000 meals of oatmeal for delivery to New York’s hungry. We buy oatmeal for The Campaign Against Hunger,  a 501-c-3 and New York City's largest food pantry, serving some of NYC's hardest-hit neighborhoods (BedStuy/Brownsville/East New York). Last year alone, TCAH served 330,000 families and distributed 8.6 million meals.


More than four million people go hungry in New York every day—and more than 50% are children. Many of the hungry, including children, the elderly and those with disabilities, have no way to work, and they face hunger every day as a serious struggle. Living in one of the wealthiest cities, we often don’t see the tremendous hunger before our eyes. But it is very real. People will stand outdoors for hours in freezing temperatures hoping to bring home some food. Some wait on line on behalf of friends or family members who are too ill to wait in line themselves. Often food pantries run out of food, and not everyone gets fed. COVID has been absolutely devastating for New York’s Hungry. More than ever, the food demand skyrocketed, bringing in a flood of new people who had never visited a food pantry before (40% of recipients this year had never visited a food pantry before).  


With the philosophy of focusing on one simple, direct way to help, Project Oatmeal’s goal is to provide one of the most needed foods to New York’s hungriest. Oatmeal is at the top of the “most needed” food list. Oatmeal is desirable for many reasons: it is Inexpensive, highly nutritious, light to transport and has a long shelf life; it also lowers cholesterol, is a good breakfast food, and is safe for all stratums of society, from children to the elderly. It also tends to put a smile on people’s faces. 


As always, 100% of money received by the Campaign will be used for oatmeal, and 0% will be used for overhead. Project Oatmeal makes it possible to feed hungry New Yorkers at a cost of approximately 15 cents a meal. That feat would be remarkable anywhere—and is even more so in New York City.

The Campaign Against Hunger (TCAH) was founded in 1998 by Dr. Melony Samuels, who was led by compassion to assist a single, disabled mother struggling to feed her four children. Today, TCAH, which is anchored in Central Brooklyn, is one of the largest and most trusted emergency food and community support organizations in New York City. TCAH's mission is to empower residents to live healthier, more productive, and self-sufficient lives. We do so by increasing our clients’ access to safe, nutritious food, social services, and a wide range of programming. Youth workforce development and training, urban farming, and nutrition education are all ways TCAH works to alleviate poverty by helping community members to build self-determination, engage in grassroots activism, and invest in civic life.
