The Children's Course

Our friend and loved one, Bill Kim, inspired us all to do a lot of good work in his name over the last year!  It's hard to believe it's now been two years since he passed away unexpectedly ... but gathering here together, and making the world a better place in his honor gives us a way to keep his memory close, and carry his name on.

Anyone who knew Bill knows that he loved heading out to the golf course and that he often spoke excitedly about eventually having kids of his own.   The The Children's Course felt particularly fitting as our charity of choice in honoring and remembering Bill, by helping children connect with golf and the greater values that the game instills in all who play it.

We are partnering with The Children's Course / First Tee of Greater Portland again this year.  If you're not familiar with it, The Children's Course is a non profit that is dedicated to keeping youth on the right path with guidance and sport opportunities that otherwise might not be available to them. Part of the program includes a 9-hole par 3 golf course located in Gladstone Oregon - a course that is probably the first golf course that Bill ever played on.

Last year, you helped us raise almost DOUBLE what we set out to raise in partnership with The Children's Course, on Bill's behalf.  We raised money in Bill's name to send youth to golf camps and programs there, to have his name memorialized on a plaque placed in the new Learning Center being built next year, and to also provide a scholarship in Bill's name to a youth taking part in the program.   

In addition to all of the above, we have set aside a small portion of the funds raised as a jump off point for keeping this program moving forward for this next season. 

This year, we'd like to keep the momentum going and do it again!  Our goal is to award double the college scholarships, and double the number of kids we send to golf clinics through The Children's Course too.

The Children’s Course

The Children’s Course is a non profit dedicted to providing golfing opportunities for youths and their families of all income levels. The course itself is a 9-hole, par 3 golf course in Gladstone:  again, this is likely one of the first golf courses (if not the actual first) that Bill ever played on.  

The organization also partners with the First Tee of Greater Portland to provide young people with character building and life skills lessons, using golf as the platform.  

The impact that The Children’s Course has on the youths it serves is about so much more than golf, as we learned.  The organization and its staff and volunteers provide mentoring, tutoring and assistance with schoolwork, and a consistent family like atmosphere for the youths it serves.  A number of the youths that start with the organization in their early years maintain a connection and stay with the program through their high school years.


What these donations will go towards:

- Scholarship:  For Bill, his time at the University of Oregon provided him not only with a degree, but with a brotherhood of friendships he kept throughout his life.  We want to help others get the chance to experience college in his name. These funds will go towards providing a one time scholarship to a youth currently involved with the Children’s Course today. Our intention is to attempt to prioritize Korean youth if possible, however youth all all ethnicity and background will be eligible and welcomed with open arms. 


- Children’s Golf Camps:  Any additional funds we raise above the Learning Center and Scholarship amounts will go towards sending children to golf camps throughout the year.  The Children’s Course is committed to providing youths from ALL economic backgrounds the chance to play golf, and these funds will pay the entrance fee for the fall, spring and summer programs with equipment and other needs provided.


Financial Goal

We are hoping to raise $4,000, at which level we can contribute to all of the above initiatives in Bills name.  Of course, we hope to raise more, and if we can, it will allow more scholarship applicants to benefit, as well as more sponsorships for youth to attend golf camps.

So, we thought what greater way to remember him by helping youth of our community through an activity that he himself loved - Golf.

So, we are seeking to raise funds to do exactly this in his name.

We are partnering with The Children's Course / First Tee of Greater Portland, which is a non profit that is dedicated to keeping youth on the right path with guidance and sport opportunities that otherwise might not be available to them. We will be raising money in Bill's name to send youth to golf camps and programs there, to have his name memorialized on a plaque placed in the new Learning Center being built next year, and to also provide scholarships in Bills name to some of the youth taking part in the program to help them go to college and further their own educations.

We hope to make this an annual event - with future events including a get together for Korean BBQ and maybe eventually a golf tournament as well. But we need to get this program rolling first, so your help is much appreciated.

 - The Children’s Course Learning Center:  The Children’s Course is breaking ground this fall on a new Learning Center, which will significantly expand their ability to make an impact in young lives off the golf course.  The new center will be able to serve 1500 children with learning and instruction, 365 days a year.

As part of our donation, Bill’s name will be memorialized on a plaque honoring sponsors at the new facility. There are various VIP rewards that come with the plaque sponsorship that we will give to people who contribute the highest donations to this endeavor.
