Keep Lifting Labels: Support Jobs After Incarceration
Your donation to Lifting Labels creates sustainable careers for formerly incarcerated men and women - changing lives with each stitch!
We're at a critical crossroads. The jobs we provide, the lives we transform, and the community impact we create all need your immediate support by June 30, 2025.
A Legacy of Pride and Purpose
Growing up in segregated West Baltimore, from Gold and Division Streets to Poplar Grove Street, our founder learned the values that would one day shape Lifting Labels. As a Class of 1957 graduate of Frederick Douglass High School, he experienced firsthand the power of mentorship, high expectations, and community pride.
"Don't stop, don't give up, keep going," his swim coach Mr. Melvin Cade would shout when practices got tough. Those words became a life philosophy that now fuels our mission at Lifting Labels.
After 68 years, our founder returned to his roots at Frederick Douglass High School with the purpose of creating pathways of opportunity for those who need them most, just as his teachers once did for him.
Your donation will be used to directly:
- Provide a livable wage to returning citizens
- Help employees support themselves and their families
- Build confidence and self-esteem in those seeking a second chance
- Transform benefit recipients into tax-paying contributors
- Create pathways to meaningful careers and financial independence
- Reduce recidivism rates in our community
- Support our innovative project transforming old band uniforms into beautiful, functional aprons - giving new life to these materials while honoring the school's musical heritage
- 10% of all donations go towards the music program at Frederick Douglass High School, our founder's alma mater – honoring the place where he once played trumpet in the marching band
"I feel a strong sense of obligation and commitment to give back to help those who tend to be underserved in order that they can achieve a better quality of life," our founder explains. This is the driving force behind Lifting Labels.
This is a decisive moment for our organization. Without securing these funds, we may be forced to scale back our operations - ending opportunities for those who need them most. Your contribution today helps someone get a second chance tomorrow.
Every donation, no matter the size, helps us continue this essential work. Thank you for ensuring that returning citizens have a path forward during this make-or-break time.
