The Clubhouse for Special Needs needs YOUR help!
The past year has been tough for many, but especially for The Clubhouse for Special Needs, and it is now in imminent danger of closing if we can't raise the funds to help with their monthly expenses. They provide a safe and nurturing environment for special needs teens and young adults and an invaluable service to the working parents of these amazing young people. For those of you that don't know, the options for day supervision of a special needs young person are few and far between and most don't offer the extended hours which working parents need. The Clubhouse fills a need like no other and the relationship the staff have with the kids is trustworthy and familial. Check out theclubhouse.org for more information on the great work they do and read the story of Jonathan, the founders son, and how the Clubhouse came to be. Your donation directly affects the lives of these special young people!
My personal story:
My daughter, who will be 27 in November, is IDD (intellectually and developmentally disabled) since birth. She is a sweet, loving and very social young lady who loves music and dance parties and can be a little bossy at times (not sure who she got that from....) I was fortunate that my mother, before her passing, was able to care for my daughter after school through middle school. After we lost my mom, my elderly neighbor watched her for a year or so. As time went on and my neighbors health began to deteriorate I became frantic trying to figure out what I would do for afterschool care. As a single parent I HAVE to work and I was desperate to find a safe environment for her. She was in high school so too old for daycare and trying to find a nanny or sitter for a special needs child is beyond difficult. One afternoon, while waiting for the bus to return our Special Olympics team from a basketball game, I was confiding in another parent about my disheartening search. She told me about The Clubhouse and it was life changing for me and my daughter. In the years she's spent with Darlene and Barbara, and the rest of the staff, she has become more independent and verbal and would prefer to be there rather than home (that's a good thing). And I have peace of mind knowing my daughter is being instructed and nurtured by people who truly have a heart for our special kids who are so often overlooked by society. Please help us save this important asset to our community that has for so many years been a blessing to so many!
