The Connected Chef

WHO WE ARE:

The Connected Chef is an organization of cooks and restaurant workers on a mission: to build a community-controlled food system that provides fresh, local ingredients; healthy eating education; and pathways to financial agency. We work toward this mission through our Lifeline grocery delivery and equitable farm stand programming. Through these efforts, The Connected Chef delivers fresh, nutrient dense, culturally appropriate groceries to our largely Latino community, while supporting local farms and businesses, creating job opportunities and deepening community control.

THE ASK:

This Spring, The Connected Chef will bring back our Sliding Scale Farm Stand at 31st Avenue Open Streets for a second year and we’re on a mission to expand food access even further with and for our neighbors.

In addition to our current two pricing tiers, we hope to add weekly free grocery distribution to continue to expand food access in Astoria to families experiencing food insecurity. To ensure this happens consistently on a weekly basis and with the participation and input of our community, we need your support.

Families will receive a 20 lb. Lifeline Grocery box filled with:

Hot, prepared meals will also be available for currently houseless individuals navigating both immigration processes and the NYC shelter system.

By enriching this piece of our programming, we wish to provide immediate and tangible relief for neighbors experiencing food insecurity, while strengthening our support for the local farm, Angel Family Farm.

CNN Heroes 2022

 

Kim Calichio, a former New York City chef, saw her fellow restaurant workers lose their jobs and struggle at the start of the pandemic. So, as the world started to shut down in March of 2020, Calichio founded The Connected Chef, a nonprofit that delivers fresh, healthy groceries to people in need across Queens, NY. The organization grew quickly and now delivers free groceries weekly to 550 households.
