Journey to Dream Fundraiser
As UNT students, we are actively raising funds for the Journey to Dream (JDF) foundation. Journey to Dream is an organization with a mission to embrace, equip, and empower homeless, hurting, and at-risk teens to achieve recovery, overcome adversity, and live purposeful lives. They provide a stable environment and essential support services to help these vulnerable young people build a brighter future.
The Social Issue
The impact of homelessness on education is profound and troubling. Homelessness can interfere with students' emotional, social, and academic development. Constant absences, educational instability, and a lack of school support can hinder their ability to reach their full potential.
Homeless students experience educational instability, often needing to start over in new schools, resulting in sinking scores and lower achievement.
Over 40% of homeless students drop out during middle or high school, facing challenges that affect their academic progress.
Stress from homelessness disrupts focus and learning, often leading to developmental delays or behavioral problems.
Public schools reported that 1.2 million students in kindergarten through 12th grade experienced homelessness during the 2021-2022 school year, a 10% increase over the previous year.
Without a high school diploma, these youth are 4.5 times more likely to experience homelessness in their lifetime. Journey to Dream strives to break this cycle and provide these young people with a pathway to success.
How the Money Will Be Used
Your generous donation will directly support Journey to Dream's key programs:
Kyle’s Place: A residential campus offering essential elements of "home" to teens experiencing homelessness. It provides stability and guidance, helping them to heal and grow.
School Programs: We offer in-school programming that helps students explore their strengths and identity, preparing them to become confident, productive adults who can give back to the community.
Support Services: Our ongoing support services ensure our youth have a stable and reliable source for advice, resources, and support as they continue their journey of healing and growth.
Personal Story Shared by Organization
"When I was 15, I reluctantly told my parents that I was gay, hoping they would understand. The talk ended with my dad threatening me and my mom saying, 'being gay is a choice.' So, I left home and bounced between friends and other family members until I found Journey to Dream.
Not having my parents in my life affected me more than I understood at the time. I missed a lot, and it impacted my ability to develop positive relationships and grow mentally and emotionally. Journey to Dream is helping me let go of the constant feeling of shame and disappointment toward my family.
Everyone can get stuck in a negative loop, no matter who they are. My worst fear is that loop. I've seen people stuck in it for their entire lives. It takes a personal decision and dedication to break out of that loop. It gets better, but only if you work to make it better. Journey to Dream helps me to do that."
