The Journey to Dream Foundation

For young adults, homelessness can happen in a variety of ways. Homeless young adults stay with friends, and family traveling from house to house. They may stay in motels, shelters, cars, parks, public spaces, abandoned buildings, or any safe place to reside.

As the only youth residential campus in Denton County for assisting young adults ages 14-19, Kyle’s Place arranges stability, security, support, and a family-like experience where youth can:

Foster a positive identity

Break negative cycles

Establish and create a plan for their future

Find the necessary life skills to overcome challenges in adulthood

Programs:

Kyle’s Place – The only youth transitional housing campus in Denton County, Kyle’s Place offers teens (ages 14-19) a safe and supportive environment. Residents receive medical care, academic assistance, nutritious meals, and essential resources to support their well-being.

Dream Initiative – An in-school program that helps students develop confidence and essential life skills, including anger management, substance abuse prevention, and conflict resolution. This program equips students with the tools to build a successful future.

Support Services – Ongoing support to ensure teens continue to have access to guidance and resources as they transition into adulthood. Services include case management, life skills training, medical and dental care referrals, and other vital support.

We are a group of students from the University of North Texas (UNT), and as part of our Civic Engagement class, we’ve partnered together on a mission to support Journey to Dream, a local nonprofit dedicated to empowering youth and providing safe, supportive environments for teens in need.

This GoFundMe is part of our class project to engage with our community in a meaningful way. Our goal is to raise awareness and financial support for Journey to Dream’s life-changing programs, including their shelter for homeless teens, Kyle’s Place. Hello! We are a passionate group of students from the University of North Texas, thrilled to partner with Journey to Dream, a life-changing organization dedicated to supporting homeless and at-risk youth in the Dallas-Fort Worth area.

We’re excited to announce our crowdfunding campaign, aiming to raise at least $500 to provide safe housing and essential resources for teenagers aged 14-19 who are experiencing homelessness or abandonment. Over the last three years, the number of identified students facing homelessness has risen by 15%, with 2,863 young people under 18 affected in 2022 alone. These numbers highlight the urgent need for stability, which is key to their educational success and future independence.

Your support will allow us to directly fund programs that offer more than just shelter; they create a nurturing environment where youth can focus on their education and build a better future. Just $500 can provide 15 days of breakfast and lunch, two social enrichment outings, or 10 therapy sessions for children in crisis.

Education goes beyond the classroom; it’s about fostering a space where young people can thrive, grow, and envision a brighter future. Hello, we are five students attending the University of North Texas (Henri, Noah, Tayseer, Mario, and Ben) who are contacting you to assist with a cause that we hold dear. In between studies, one of our team members, Henri, provides mental health counseling and coaching to teens, young adults, and families affected by trauma, addictions, and mental health issues. He and his wife have owned and operated their own practice since 2017, providing help and restoring hope to families affected by those issues.

Besides the usual routine of work and studies, we enjoy helping out Journey to Dream, a program that provides help and assists youth who have suffered from homelessness, addiction, and trauma. In Texas, for instance, one in every thirty adolescent, 13-17 years, experience homelessness, thus making it more likely for them to be prone to addiction, mental problems, and violence (National Alliance to End Homelessness, 2023). The prevalence of food insecurity amongst adolescents from low-income households is also increasing, whereby 18% of these youths do not have dependable access to healthy food, thereby impacting their health, school performance, and general well-being (Feeding America, 2023).

The mission of Journey to Dream is to build safe spaces and offer such fundamental needs as shelter, meals, and educational and psychological help to youth grappling with such situations. For us, Journey to Dream's cause is important because we have experienced how crucial it is to ensure a safe space and provide resources and assistance to teenagers going through the storm in their lives. One of the young people Henri and his wife helped in the past said that once he got stable accommodation and a support network, he was able to concentrate on his studies and what career he envisioned himself in.

This is why we are starting this GoFundMe campaign – we want to make sure that the funds raised will support Journey to Dream and its mission. A simple donation, regardless of size, has an impact on these young people's lives.
