For those of you who don't know, back in 2021 I was diagnosed and treated for Nodular Sclerosing Hodgkin Lymphoma. Although I am currently still in remission, it was recently discovered that I now have Chronic Myeloid Leukaemia with confirmed Philadelphia chromosome. My new diagnosis is believed to be a new primary cancer, but the body of research on HL survivors with CML is very limited. Unlike my previous unexpected 'adventure', I was quickly diagnosed and have already started my indefinite Tyrosine Kinase Inhibitor (TKI) treatment. Second generation TKIs provide a chance for treatment-free remission, which as a young patient is extremely valuable and something that first generation medication lacks.
CML is a chronic, often life-long disease that just 30 years ago would have been a death sentence within 3-5 years from diagnosis. Now, several targeted therapies—each with their own laundry list of benefits and side effects—exist that have the ability to transform a disease into a liveable condition. Unfortunately, the primary barrier to any of these treatments is cost.
It's no secret that I find today's extensive health inequity both unsustainable and immoral. Increasing the accessibility and affordability of new, highly effective treatments is a mission I wholeheartedly believe in and strive to support as I continue my journey in the medical field as both a patient and professional. At this stage in my life, I am so fortunate to have access to private insurance that covers my treatment, but this may not always be the case and most definitely is not for the majority of those affected by CML.
