Trail marathon for Nepali elementary school
The School: In 2017, thanks to your very generous support, The Nepal Project raised about $14,000, which was enough money to begin construction at Himchuli, which intends to be a model school for the Dang Valley. It is located in a developing part of the city of Gorahi, in a neighborhood of mostly young Nepali families. The school will be a Montessori style school, and it should be an attractive option for those who want to obtain the best possible education for their children. The school construction is now physically completed externally. All the structural work is complete, and the structure is safe. The building has a basement that contains a water tank and pumping system, and there are 3 stories above it for classrooms, storage and teacher training. However, construction costs cleaned out the school’s bank account, and the Nepali staff took on a mortgage to finish the construction. Now we still don’t have an “inside” to the building that would allow us to open the school and begin teaching the kids in the community. Specifically the school needs painting, furniture, a water purification system, solar panels for power, and technology such as wireless and laptops. We estimate the total financial need to be around $11,000.
The Race: I will be running the Cayuga Trails 26-mile trail marathon on June 1st. Located near Ithaca NY, the race winds its way through a landscape of continuous and sometimes steep ebbs and flows, past waterfalls cascading through slot gorges, via single track to runnable park service trails, and from creek crossings to historic stone stair cases that test the limits of human endurance. This will be my second ultramarathon, after the Annapurna 50K in 2017. I started training for this race on January 1st, and am carefully planning my exercise and nutrition program, including preparing for the variability of terrain. This will be another huge challenge but I am committed to it!
The Nepal Project: Nepal made the news in 2015 when earthquakes shook the country, destroying buildings and killing thousands. Although over 3 years have passed since the quakes, much of the country still remains in rubble. The Nepal Project is a charitable organization based near Charlotte NC, whose main mission is to support the construction of schools and promote education in rural Nepal. They have been operating in Nepal for more than 10 years.
Your Help: I am requesting your sponsorship in per mile increments. I will be running 26 miles. You could sponsor me for any amount. $26 would be $1 per mile, $52 would be $2 per mile, or $104 would be $4 per mile. Any amount is welcome!!! Funds from your donation on Gofundme will be sent to The Nepal Project. Please note that for US taxpayers, 100% of your contribution is tax deductible, as The Nepal Project is an IRS-approved public charity under section 501c3. The 501c3 is available upon request. Perhaps you work for an employer who will match your contribution, as some have done in the past.
Your Impact: Your contribution will make an immediate impact in the lives of Nepali children, some of whom may now be able to attend school for the first time. I am really excited to have found this opportunity to help make a difference in these children's lives, and I really appreciate your support!
