Keep The Ruby LA Alive!
Hi! We're The Ruby LA , a nonprofit* intersectional feminist** inclusive comedy*** school and theater. And our mission is to lift up and make space for marginalized voices in comedy. We have classes taught by women, POC, LGBTQ+ instructors, shows featuring those same voices, have an annual Queer Comedy Fest, and our board is 85% women and people of color. We really really believe in our mission.
But we at The Ruby LA have recently got some bad news.
Our little theater space, that we've put all of our heart and soul into, is being demolished so that condos can be put in. We know. It DOES sound like a Joni Mitchell song.
So we've got to move to a new location. And we've got to move fast. We have to be out by November 30th! But real estate in LA is tricky and moving is expensive. And our little theater company can't afford to move at all without turning to our community for help.
We need to raise $15,000 to cover moving costs, new rent requirements, and the physical build of a whole new space! We think we can do it.
And if we do - we've got some stretch goals too!
If we raise $20,000 we're going to invest in:
New lighting
New software for the tech booth (like Qlab!)
New Mics
Better classroom materials (like a printer)
Better stage design
If we raise $30,000 we can hire more staff! Like tech people! Woohoo!
If we raise $40,000 - we're getting a pool. Just don't tell Jeff. But like, a pool would be so great right now, wouldn't it?
But seriously, the more money we raise, the better we will make the space and the more we can give back to our community (see definition of nonprofit below). Because we truly love ya'll and we do this all for you!
So please, share this out! Donate what you can! And help us keep The Ruby LA Alive!
*Nonprofit Theater: A theater not conducted or maintained for the purpose of making a profit. All profits must go back into serving the intended community.
**Intersectional Feminism: gender equality that takes into account all parts of an individual's identity (for example race, class, disability, sexuality)
***Comedy: Like jokes and stuff
