9/13 Update: Thank you to all of you who have donated to Jax's care!! Jax had is abdominal ultrasound yesterday. As these appointments normally go, we have some test results to wait for. The radiologist had to aspirate a few areas which means these results will take some time to receive.
Jax is back in his habitat and is playful and exploring.
Thank you for all the love and support you have given this boy. Please continue to keep Jax in your thoughts ❤️.
Jax is a 4-month-old bobcat kitten who arrived at the Wildcat Sanctuary with some serious health concerns after being stabilized at another facility.
Upon his arrival to TWS, we noted vision impairment, open mouth breathing, exercise intolerance, periodic lethargy, front leg tremors, and one episode of mild seizure activity.
Based on his history and many of his clinical findings, a taurine deficiency during early development was highly suspected, but this was not the case.
Our initial thoughts were that taurine deficiency can cause retinal degeneration (blindness), dilated cardiomyopathy (heart disease), as well as indirectly causing many of the other clinical signs observed.
We brought Jax to a board-certified cardiologist to perform diagnostic tests: an echocardiogram (ultrasound of the heart), ECG, blood pressure, and chest radiographs were performed, totaling $1,256.
Fortunately, all the cardiac findings were normal for Jax. Unfortunately, the lack of findings on the cardiac evaluation led to more questions than answers.
Blood tests were performed on multiple occasions. Jax had low blood glucose upon arrival to the wildlife rehab and was also anemic. When we performed the blood tests again, he still had a significantly low blood sugar level.
Now, we have shifted our focus to a working diagnosis of persistent hypoglycemia even with a good diet.
The next step is to perform an abdominal ultrasound to check his liver, pancreas, adrenal glands, and GI tract. In the meantime, the sanctuary staff feed him five times a day to try and stabilize his blood sugar.
Jax is a happy bobcat kitten that has been dealt a bad hand. He can see changes in light and loves to stalk and play just like any other bobcat kitten.
He deserves a fighting chance to grow up wild at heart at The Wildcat Sanctuary.
Will you help us cover medical costs to give this brave boy a fighting chance? No amount is too small, and every amount is appreciated.
Your gift will help cover ongoing medical costs, diagnostics, toys and daily care for Jax.
The Wildcat Sanctuary (TWS) is the only accredited, non-profit sanctuary in the Midwest. TWS provides a natural sanctuary to wild cats in need and inspires change to end the captive wildlife crisis. Combining natural and spacious habitats with a life free of exhibition, TWS allows all residents to live wild at heart. As a true sanctuary, we do not buy, breed, sell or exhibit animals. The Wildcat Sanctuary is accredited by the Global Federation of Animal Sanctuaries. More information can be found at WildcatSanctuary.org.
