Become a Volunteer at Top Honors:
* You would volunteer to teach a middle school student math once a week from 10am-12pm or 1pm to 3pm on Saturdays, either on the Upper West Side or in Brooklyn Heights. Summers and holiday weekends are off. So it works out to about 23 weeks/year, and we ask that you commit to 80% of those. So, 18-19 weeks/year, 2 hours a week.
* It's middle school math; it's not rocket science. If you can solve 3x + 5 = 11, then you're probably overqualified.
* We'll give you training, lesson plans, worksheets, a student incentive system, and supervision/moral support. You just need to show up and be a compassionate adult to a child that could use the leg up.
* It's a great way to meet people. Our tutors are generally just normal professionals aged 17-50 that want to do something bigger than themselves. There's over a hundred of them: doctors, lawyers, bankers, ad men, college students, techies... We hold regular social events like Happy Hours and Trivia Nights. It’s a great networking opportunity professionally, and one tutor described us as "Match.com for altruists."
* For younger professionals, it's also a good way to get into grad school. Our tutors have left us to go to such places as Stanford, Wharton, Princeton, Cornell, NYU, Columbia and Duke, among other places.
If you're interested, the online application is here. It takes 5-10 minutes to fill out and implies no commitment. That being said, about 1/4 of our tutors have been volunteering for 4+ years and some have been doing it for over a decade, so be prepared to fall in love with Top Honors.
