Helping Kyla Heal
On Friday, October 1st 16 year-old Kyla-Simone Sobers-Batties, senior at Cobble Hill High School of American Studies, was in the Gowanus Playground with her friends making TikTok videos after school moments before she was struck by a stray bullet. Kyla was taken to the hospital where she underwent surgery to remove bullet fragments from her head. Thankfully she is now out of an induced coma.
With all these unplanned medical expenses, the family needing to take time off work to support and be there for each other and for Kyla through this traumatic experience, these funds will be a way for friends, families and supporters to care for the family through this incredible difficult time.
Trellis in collaboration with the God Squad , have worked with the family to organize this fundraiser. All the funds raised will go directly to the family.
“She has a great heart and she cares for others and she’s courageous and through all the pain she is in, she’s still fighting,” Nadine Sobers said.
Kyla, a straight-A student, who her mom Nadine, says plans to study law in college, is also turning 17 birthday on Oct. 16th. The family is hopeful they’ll be able to celebrate together.
Kyla's mother, Nadine Sobers wants people to know,
"We can't just keep saying it can't happen to me, because it can," she said. "I never thought that my daughter going to school on Friday morning would end up with my daughter being in the hospital Monday afternoon
I want the community to know that to move forward they must work with each other to bring change within the community. To make it safe for our children and future generations to come. The traumatic events that befell my daughter should not happen to another."
She also wanted to thank all the people in the neighborhood who was there that day for their quick movements help to save herdaughter's life.
