Thanksgiving Community Meal 2024
For more than 40 years, Trinity has been hosting a meal on Thanksgiving! All are welcome, and we usually serve about 1000 meals. This annual event is made possible by a giant crew of volunteers and donations. Any support you could give would be most appreciated!

UPPER WEST SIDE CHURCH'S LGBTQ YOUTH SHELTER
Trinity Lutheran Church of Manhattan on West 100th Street between Amsterdam and Columbus Avenues has renovated its basement to better house the Trinity Place Shelter, a shelter dedicated to LGBTQ+ youth. We seek to raise $10,000 for folding chairs and tables, dollies to carry these chairs and tables and other furniture and equipment to fully furnish this newly renovated basement space. The shelter uses the basement overnight, leaving the space available for community functions during the day. Because they are portable and can be easily stored, the chairs and tables will allow the basement to be used by the church and the community for various functions, some of which may provide much-needed revenue through rentals. The $10,000 will be used to purchase and ship qty (120) heavy-duty folding chairs (480lb capacity with cushioned seats and back); qty (10) 30”x72” rectangular tables; qty (10) 60” circular tables and three dollies designed to transport and store these chairs and tables compactly.

With these chairs and tables, the church basement will accommodate meetings, lectures and performances for up to 120 people, including annual coop meetings for buildings in the neighborhood. With the tables, the church basement will accommodate dinners and parties for up to 70 people, including Trinity Lutheran’s annual Thanksgiving Day dinner for the local community.

While housed in the basement of Trinity Lutheran Church on the Upper West Side of Manhattan, TPS is a small, secular organization staffed by licensed social workers. TPS opened in June 2008 to serve LGBTQ youth, especially youth of color, who often face hostile discrimination when staying in standard shelter programs.

Staying Home for the Holidays with Trinity Place
On behalf of Trinity Place Shelter and The Catalyst Team at Compass, we want to THANK YOU so much for contributing to our GoFundMe Campaign, "Staying Home For The Holidays". During this particularly difficult time for so many, we are honored and humbled by your support.

Trinity Place Shelter (TPS) is a small, non-sectarian shelter for LGBTQ+ youth and young adults aged 18 to 24 on the Upper West Side of Manhattan. Our mission centers on an especially vulnerable population in our community and fills a critical niche by providing a safe, affirming and nurturing environment to young people, disproportionately black and brown youth, who have systemically been denied such.

Trinity Place Shelter residents can stay up to 18 months and receive the individualized care and support they need to begin to heal from trauma and gain a strong foothold out of homelessness. Food, supplies, transportation and laundry costs are provided, and through onsite social workers, volunteers and community partners, our residents access supports such as therapeutic counseling, resume building, interview coaching, medical services, legal counsel and money management. Operating on a shoe-string budget during normal times, this "Little Shelter That Could" has accomplished remarkable things through love and determination. The Covid crisis has significantly increased their budget.

Trinity Place Shelter relies on the generosity of our vibrant and growing community of supporters who demonstrate love through action. Help us sustain this crucial and transformative community resource and break the cycle of homelessness!

More than 1.6 million youth experience homelessness in the United States each year, 40% of whom identify as LGBTQ. At just 7% of the population, LGBTQ youth are disproportionately affected. In New York City alone, which has the second highest population of homeless youth in the country, there are as many as 8,000 homeless LGBTQ youth.

Trinity Place Shelter, located in Manhattan, a 10-bed transitional shelter for LGBTQ youth, provides a safe space to sleep, shower, eat, and store belongings as well as various resources, including group and individual counseling, independent living supportive services, and access to transportation.

On May 5, shortly after my 26th birthday, I will be traveling to Vancouver, BC, a city with one of the largest housing inequalities in the world, to run the Vancouver Marathon. I want to use this experience as an opportunity to raise awareness for the LGBTQ youth homelessness epidemic and money for Trinity Place Shelter, an organization tackling the problem head on.

My goal is to raise $100 for each of the 26 miles of the race, a total of $2,600. $2,600 for 26 miles on my 26th birthday.

About Trinity Community Connection

TCC has 5 programs, the largest is Trinity Place Shelter, a 10-bed transitional shelter for LGBTQ youth and young people. Our mission is to help homeless lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender or queer (LGBTQ*) youth and young adults in New York City to safely transition out of the shelter system and grow into independent, positive, and productive adults. The four other programs are: the Creative Learning Center for elementary-aged children, Mujeres en Progreso for Latina women, an annual Thanksgiving Dinner, and an emergency Food Pantry. Our mission is to provide these service programs to neighborhood families and individuals who are unable to find or afford such services.
