Triple Negative Breast Cancer Foundation

On March 4th 2023 our beautiful brave and courageous daughter Sara Luise Sinclair passed away after fighting a fierce 3 year battle against Triple-negative breast cancer. A very aggressive type of breast cancer that is more difficult to treat .

 Drugs and therapies that are commonly used for other breast cancers may not work to treat TNBC and because of this it is more likely to spread to other organs and recur. 

Before cancer Sara was energetic, athletic , vivacious and looking forward to living a full healthy life . She had plans on buying  her own home , advancing her career , starting a family ,traveling etc. All the things a young woman dreams of . All that changed in Jan 2020 when she discovered a small lump in her breast . Tests revealed she had one of the most aggressive types of breast cancer there is and is very hard to treat .She decided at that point to move back home to be with us so that we could best support her in this new and very scary journey . 

 Knowing this cancer was so aggressive her oncology team decided to throw everything at it She endured 3 years of Chemotherapy , immunotherapy , a double mastectomy , radiation, drugs that made her very sick and put her into early menopause plus numerous blood transfusions. Through it all she held her head high, never complaining always looking & researching what she could do do beat this beast and trying to live her life in the best way possible. Still planning ahead for those trips abroad one day and possibly adopting a baby . Unfortunately after all these treatments the cancer kept advancing and spread to her sternum and her liver and by November of 2022 it was found to have metastasized to her brain . She did not qualify for the clinical trials due to her particular gene markers and the trials that were available were still only in phase 1 infancy . So not safe yet for human testing or with enough proven success.  Sara kept fighting though ! Never giving up hope . Always researching the latest treatment or drug even if it was not available to her yet . She fought through the pain as the cancer progressed in her liver. Rarely complaining although we could see her deterioration as she struggled to walk . She celebrated Christmas and New Year with our family smiling and laughing in pictures . By February though there was a marked change and after her last chemo she ended up in hospital with dangerously low red blood and platelet levels . The hospital scan showed her tumor had grown immensely just over a few weeks . After more blood and platelet transfusions and knowing that more Chemo would likely make her sicker she  decided to come home on hospice to be surrounded by her family . 

Sara had just celebrated her 39th Birthday when she passed . She was a vibrant, beautiful, loving and very talented young woman . She loved her family and friends and being outdoors in nature . Sara fought cancer with everything she had and was so determined to live every day to the fullest. She did Not let cancer take over her spirit or define who she was! 

Her death has been a devastating loss to our family . To honor our beautiful daughter on June 5th - June 12th our family have chosen to hike together 96 miles through Scotland on the West Highland Way to raise funds for the Triple Negative Breast Cancer Foundation . We chose this non profit charity as they strive to be a credible source for triple negative breast cancer information, a catalyst for science & research and patient advocacy groups, and a caring community with meaningful services for patients and their families. We feel that Sara would want more research, education and outreach to be done for this type of aggressive cancer and hopefully one day we pray they finally find a cure! 

We will be updating this page as our journey gets closer, posting information , pictures and videos of our hike and fond memories of Sara . Sara will be with us on our journey too . Honoring Hannah's Memory: Join Us in the Fight Against Triple Negative Breast Cancer

At the age of 9, Hannah embarked on a journey that would shape her life forever. She found her true passion for acting at Roberta Jones Junior Theatre, where she not only honed her skills but also built cherished friendships. Over the years, RJJT became her home away from home.

Hannah's talent was undeniable, and she graced the stage with iconic performances, leaving an everlasting impact on audiences. From High School Musical's Gabriella to Stuart Little's Margalo and Hello Dolly's Dolly Levi, she lit up the theater with her presence. At 16 years old, Hannah was hired to work at RJJT and went on to create a positive impact for the group and the community. In addition to directing, Hannah had numerous roles while on staff: being an assistant for Imagine Me, a camp leader for our summer production of CATS, stage manager, assistant director for rehearsals, and also assisted creatively with set construction and painting.

Tragically, at just 27 years old, Hannah's life took an unexpected turn when she faced a fierce battle against triple-negative breast cancer. Throughout her journey, she showed incredible determination, resilience, and unwavering positivity.

My mother was diagnosed with triple negative breast cancer in May 2021, and has been fighting her battle ever since. She has gone through multiple chemotherapy protocols, breast-conserving surgery, and is currently undergoing radiation for her treatment.

Throughout every step, she has carried herself with grace and love, and makes a point to make a connection with each person she meets along the way. Our family has rallied behind her, but she is the one running the marathon of cancer treatments - with us trying to be her support team as best as we can.

So to honor her efforts and those of all patients with triple negative breast cancer, and to raise funds to support current research efforts to understand this disease better, I will be running a 50 kilometer stretch to the top of Mount Greylock.

I have never particularly enjoyed running in and of itself (very much prefer it if I have a hockey stick in hand); however, I became a very recreational jogger post-college and had toyed with the idea of running of marathon. Nonetheless, I never quite had the motivation to pay tribute to the ancient Greek messenger who ran the 25 mile distance from the site of Marathon to Athens with news of the ever-important Greek victory over the Persians in 490 B.C. (as a historical aside, the distance was elongated to 26.2 miles when the Olympics were hosted in London in 1908 to accommodate the wishes of the British Royal Family, who wanted the race to begin on the lawn of Windsor Castle and finish in front of the royal box at the Olympic stadium--a distance that is exactly 26.2 miles). However, in early 2021, my mom was diagnosed with triple negative breast cancer, and I finally mustered up the will to run a marathon for a cause greater than myself and to help raise money for and awareness about Triple Negative Breast Cancer.

Triple Negative Breast cancer is a less common form of breast cancer, accounting for about 10-15% of all breast cancers, and unique in that it does not have any of the receptors commonly found in other forms of breast cancer. This ultimately means that the cancer grows and spreads faster, has limited treatment options, and a worse prognosis than other types. It is considered an aggressive form of cancer due to the pace at which it grows and the likelihood of recidivism. Given the lack of responsiveness to current treatment options, there is clearly a strong need for continued research funding.

Thus, I am so excited to be running the LA Marathon to raise money for the Triple Negative Breast Cancer Foundation. In addition to serving as a catalyst for science and patient advocacy and a caring community with meaningful services for patients and their families, the organization offers research grant support to encourage the launch of projects aimed at finding targeted treatments for triple negative disease. TNBC Foundation supports research at many leading institutions, including Stanford, Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, UNC, NYU, Mount Sinai, The Institute of Cancer Research (London), University of Alabama, Whitehead Institute for Biomedical Research and University of Miami.
