Help Rescue the Frear Park Ice Rink
The Frear Park Ice Rink has been bringing families together since it opened in 1974 in Troy NY. That’s over four decades and countless special moments that “Freezer Park” has provided, building deep love for the game and respect for the rink in players of all ages and abilities.
With all of the stress and uncertainty of the past year, Frear Park has been a small haven of normalcy; a much-needed outlet for community and recreation. Our rink is well loved—for what it gives us and gives back to the sport--but the rink is tired.
“Freezer Park” needs our help. The Troy Albany Hockey Association (TAHA) has worked hard to keep Frear Park open and functional without passing expenses on to the membership. The floor has been patched for as long as possible; it critically needs full floor removal and installation. The TAHA leadership has consulted world-class experts and engaged local contractors who are willing to donate their services at cost--a huge victory-- this is a powerful sign of hockey loyalty, and will mean significant savings, but the total cost will still be over $275,000 for the floor alone - not counting other improvements TAHA would like to do such as replacing the dasher boards and lighting.
While we have had victories in giving life back to Frear Park there have also been hurdles--issues with the flooring, the dehumidification system, Zamboni breakdowns, and, if those weren’t enough…a list of COVID protocol implementations!
We are reaching out to the hockey community—not just in Troy, but worldwide--because there is nothing like hockey families for supporting each other, and the game. Whether current or past players, teammates or competitors, hockey families are willing to step up and help a friend, family, or facility in need. Frear Park Ice Rink is truly in need; please keep the games going by donating! And whether you can chip in financially or not, please share this post with someone you know who also loves hockey. THERE SURE ARE A LOT OF PIPES UNDER THAT FLOOR...This campaign will allow us to replace all the original piping and allow the Frear Park Ice Rink to serve generations of new skaters and hockey players!
