Opal's Walk for Juneteenth
92 year-old Opal Lee is getting on the walking trails again across the nation. Her walking campaign to get the attention President Trump and Congress to make Juneteenth a National Day of Observance like Flag Day continues. Juneteenth not only commemorates when enforcement of the Emancipation Proclamation reached the shores of Galveston, Texas and slaves were formally notified of their freedom on June 19, 1865, but it also stands as a day to celebrate the journey that it took for freedom to be realized for all. Today 46 states recognize Juneteenth as a state holiday or day of observance to commemorate the abolition of slavery, so it's no longer just a Texas thing.
Lee's first campaign in 2016 saw her start in the DFW area. She completed stops in Shreveport, LA, Texarkana, AR, Fort Smith, AR, Little Rock, AR, St. Louis, MO, Jackson, MS, Birmingham, AL, Selma, AL, Tuskegee, AL, Atlanta, GA, Madison, WI, Milwaukee, WI, Pueblo, CO, Littleton, CO, Chicago, IL, Columbia, SC, Durham, NC, Winston-Salem, NC, Hampton, VA, Pittsburg, PA, Philadelphia, PA and Washington, DC walking over 125 miles at age 90 with Juneteenth organizers and supporters on her symbolic walk of 2.5 miles in the morning and 2.5 miles in the evening. She appreciates everyone who supported her previous efforts and hopes they'll do it again.
