The United States-Japan Foundation is fundraising
USJF Match to Fund Restoring Stolen Peace Park Sadako Statue
Sometime in the night between July 11th and 12th, a statue of Sadako Sasaki was stolen from Peace Park in Seattle Washington. Sadako was a survivor of the Hiroshima atomic bombing who died at 12 years old from radiation poisoning. She believed in the Japanese tradition of senbazuru, and folded hundreds of origami cranes to wish for health and peace.
The United States-Japan Foundation and its US-Japan Leadership Program are supporting a fundraising drive by University Friends Meeting in Seattle to restore Sadako to Peace Park. USJF will match every dollar donated to this page up to $10,000 -- with the goal of raising a total of $20,000 for this cause.
