Grow Roots Miami - Free Food Gardens
We believe that growing our own food & medicine is the healthiest and safest option possible! Growing our own food is joyful, empowering, healing, educational for our youth, beneficial for our environment, strengthens sovereignty & resilience and connects us to nature, our cultural & ancestral roots and to each other within our communities!
In 2021, with your support, GROW ROOTS MIAMI:
* built 25 free, food producing, home gardens for families in need!
* provided 1 year of education, maintenance & follow up care to ensure gardens are healthy & productive!
* supported & mentored young Black, POC, queer, trans, & female farmers & growers through our mentorship and internship programs!
* hosted 30 educational community workshops on sustainability, home growing, rainbarrel collection, composting, herbalism, and much more!
* gave away over 400 free plants and trees!
* made infrastructure improvements to 2 community gardens including an outdoor kitchen, shade structures, and compost toilet!
Now, we need your help to reach our 2022/23 goals to install food producing perennial food forest gardens in every home in Miami possible! AND we are installing rainbarrel collection and compost systems in homes too!
FREE HOME GARDENS!
FREE EDUCATIONAL WORKSHOPS!
FREE PLANT & TREE GIVEAWAYS!
MENTORSHIP & INTERNSHIP PROGRAMS!
We are committed to families in need who are hardest hit by Covid-19, living in “food deserts,” especially those historically and continuously marginalized & harmed by systemic injustice, such as Black, Indigenous, people of color, queer, trans, elders, survivors of incarceration, & people with disabilities.
We work for the community by installing a free raised annual garden bed and/or a perennial food forest garden. Families can choose which they prefer depending on what types of plants they’d like to grow; choices include delicious food, native pollinators & medicinal herbs. We provide all the materials and start up labor, culturally & seasonally appropriate edible & medicinal seedlings, premium organic soil, natural fertilizers, mulch, maintenance education, and follow up calls & visits.
We need you. Our cost to build and care for each home garden is $500. This pays for one cubic yard of organic soil blend, local organic compost from Miami Compost Project, donation for seeds to Miami Seed Share, seedlings from local farmers, lumber, educational materials, gas & transportation, jobs for young BIPOC farmers, follow up calls & visits, garden care tools & materials, & insurance. Who we are: GROW ROOTS MIAMI is a non-profit collaboration between Finca Morada, Plant Philosophy, & Urban Oasis Project. We are a QTBIPOC led initiative of farmers, food justice activists, creatives & healers committed to build FREE edible gardens & food forests for low income families in our Miami Community. Finca Morada is an urban permaculture farm & community center for education, wellness, & sustainability in North Miami centering racial, LGBTQ, & food justice. Urban Oasis Project (UOP) is a non-profit committed to providing healthy accessible food to all through farmers markets, education, & garden builds since 2008. For years, UOP has built edible home gardens all over Miami, through their GIVE Gardens program. Plant Philosophy are Miami farmers & creatives who bring plant knowledge into communities, to bring us back our green roots.
