Youth Development in Haiti
USA Friends of AHTT is a 501 (c)(3) not-for-profit organization dedicated to advancing the sport of table tennis in Haiti by supporting Association Hatienne de Tennis de Table (AHTT). In 2017 AHTT celebrated its 20th anniversary of bringing table tennis to schools and community-based organizations in Haiti. Our coach Mozart Francois has been traveling to Haiti several times a year to help this group teach the sport of table tennis – while building inclusiveness, and promoting leadership skills, fitness, confidence, teamwork, and fair play.
Mozart has developed an organization to do these things, but he needs our help. In 2018 Mozart traveled to Haiti twice. In the spring, along with 2 women from USA Friends of AHTT, Mozart visited correctional facilities for both young men and women and presented table tennis skills. He ran a tournament at his home facility. In the fall an elite league with 6 teams of 4 kids each began competitive play. When Mozart returned to Haiti in December, AHTT completed the league championship and ran a tournament for about 35 kids. It was exciting to see young adults whom Mozart had trained in previous years training the younger kids.
For 2019 we have committed money for the next league session. The kids are brought to the venue, provided with equipment, team shirts (sometimes even shoes!) fed and trained. To do this costs only about $50 per week! Each donation supports young Haitians who have a safe space to learn new skills, develop self-esteem, and encouraged in their education.
