Venus Theatre is Publishing PLAYS!!
Venus Theatre is the longest-running regional women's theatre in the US. We lost our space in 2020 when the landlord tried to raise the rent 20% during a pandemic. We've decided to embrace our liberation from brick and mortar and publish our very first anthology!
Since the end of last year, we have received 315 submissions from around the world.
We are only a month or two away from PUBLISHING! And, we need some help.
This anthology will include 76 woman-empowering monologues.
In addition, a history of Venus Theatre is being published in the form of a memoir!
We are working with Palmetto Press.
In true Venus style, we continue to keep our overhead as low as possible while keeping the quality of our work as high as possible.
This total cost will cover marketing, editing, and publishing, and it will allow us to keep creative control and all rights to the work.
Playwrights need exposure. I'm excited to share works from fourteen Venus Veterans in the first chapter of the pending anthology, "Frozen Women/Flowing Voices". It's been amazing to look at the categories as they have presented themselves. Who needs the CANON?
This dream is coming true. It's been nothing less than divine to read submissions again.
Out of the three-year brainstorm came a list of priorities.
1. Tell the story of Venus publicly and check it off the list (PUBLISH IT!) so that the company can move forward.
2. Stay in touch with so many brilliant creatives and find ways to continue to share and celebrate their works. In other words, PUBLISH THEM!
3. Continue to embrace new artists and new works at every possible turn.
4. Re-embrace the nomadic roots of Venus. The touring, the site-specific works, and the collaborations with other female-empowering organizations.
5. Do everything possible to get these works up on their feet by rediscovering safe-space.
These five tenants have been discussed among our team for three years now.
Here we are on step 3, and we need a little help from our friends.
