Retired Warren K9 Requires Backup in fight with Cancer – He served us; let’s serve him

It is well known that the police and public rely on each other for help in solving crimes and making the community safer. Today, the Warren Police Department is asking for the public’s help with a retired 4-legged officer. The officer retired from the Warren Police Department in June 2024 after an action-packed career with the Department which included hundreds of deployments, the identification and location of numerous quantities of deadly narcotics, and assisted with locating nearly one-hundred people during his career. The officer’s name is Kantor and he is an 8-year-old German Shepherd. Kantor lives with his long-time partner, Officer Nicholas Hofer, and his family.

Less than 1-month after his well-earned retirement, Officer Hofer noticed a lump near Kantor’s throat. After some tests, Kantor and Officer Hofer heard the news nobody wants to hear: Kantor has cancer. Kantor has been diagnosed with lymphoma in his neck which has started to spread to several lymph nodes.

Doctors at Michigan State University have advised that Kantor will have to undergo rounds of chemotherapy to treat the cancerous lymphoma. Kantor needs the public’s help as these treatments are not inexpensive procedures. Kantor’s first chemotherapy treatment is this Friday (08/16/2024).

We are asking the community to come together and help Kantor by donating to the Warren Police & Fire Benevolent Association. The Benevolent Association will then cover all of Kantor’s current and future medical expenses so that he can receive the necessary treatments and enjoy a long and healthy retirement. Any extra donations will go towards helping first responders and their families, including retired K9s, with any unmet financial obligations. Large or small, any donation you can give will be greatly appreciated.

Officer Hofer stated that “for the last 5 years, Kantor has been the best partner I could have asked for. He has done everything that I’ve asked of him and more. This is not the retirement we had in mind for him. He deserves a long, happy, and healthy retirement.

Unfortunately with this cancer diagnosis, we know that it will not be as long as we would have hoped but I want to make the most of the time we have and pay him back for all that he has given me."
