Free After School Program
Since 1917, the Weirton Christian Center has been making a difference in the lives of children in Weirton, WV.
LAST YEAR, there were 277 children through our doors for all our FREE Programs....Preschool for 3 and 4-year-olds, Afterschool for K-12, Summer Programs for K-12.
Our cost-per-child was $1298 for the year - or $100 Monthly - $25 Weekly- $5 per day. We receive no government compensation for these children. Any help you are able to provide is greatly appreciated.
The Center was started by a Baptist Missionary and continues operation as a 501c3, under the American Baptist Home Mission Society. Started when immigrants were coming to work at Weirton Steel, the Center was the place they learned to speak English, and gained citizenship as well as much more over the years.
Today, we offer a free Pre-School and free Afterschool and Summer program for at-risk children from the age of 3 to 18. With the help of our donors, we are able to provide snacks, dinner, homework help, school supplies, computer programs like Lexia Core 5 to improve reading skills, (since many do not have internet at home), transportation to and from the Center, Jesus Loves You Scholarships to Church camp (91 went in 2014) special events and field trips they may not experience otherwise. Our Project Journey, with the aid of our AmeriCorps VISTA volunteers, teaches the importance of good nutrition, fitness, literacy and lifeskills to prepare them for their futures. Music and Art programs make a huge difference for many of our children.
Our God's Helping Hand fund provides for Emergency family assistance. We offer transportation for Pre-school, Christian Academy, Afterschool, Camp, Energy Express during the Summer Program and field trips. We also provide a donation room for clothing, housewares, and school supplies available to our children and their families. In the past year, we have been able to offer behavioral counseling for our children and even their parents. We offer classes to train staff and parents in skills to better deal with the children we serve. Our facility also provides a Visitation room for four different agencies who work with Child Protective Services and fostered children. We started Weirton's first Community Garden last year and with 7 community partners. Our goal is to teach our children and their parents about growing and eating healthy vegetables as both a nutrition and cost-saving experience.
We are a Matthew 25 Ministry. We feed them, cloth them and care for them, as Jesus directs us to do. Most of all, we want to give them a faith and relationship with the Lord that will sustain through all their lives.
Our summer program guides them through Mission Mondays, Life Skills Tuesdays, Art Wednesdays, Music Thursday, and Fitness Fridays. We will transport them to and from WVU's Energy Express, Literacy Programs, Summer Camp and their homes to get them to the program. They will receive a free lunch and snack every day, and each age group will have their own Bible Lesson and recreation at our Christian Fellowship Park.
But all of this takes funding - groceries, gasoline, supplies, maintenance, and enough good people to make it all happen. Please help us generate the funds we need to create a phenomenal Summer Program at the Weirton Christian Center! Your donations, and your prayers for our ministry are greatly appreciated.
