Following the success of its 2017 Miami production of “The R+J Effect” What if Works Inc., a 501c community-engaged company of young actors plans to share its commonsense message about gun violence with youths in some of the hardest hit communities beyond Florida including Chicago, Washington DC, New Orleans, Baltimore and New York. To make this goal a reality What if Works is asking for your support.
In partnership with Denver Public Schools, Denver Police Department, the Metropolitan State University of Denver and Denver International Studies High School the Latino Capulets from Miami will meet the Denver Montagues in What if Work’ first interstate production; “The R+J Effect: Denver”.
“The R+J Effect: Denver” is a ninety-minute interactive, contemporary adaptation of Shakespeare’s “Romeo and Juliet”. At times the audience becomes part of the action as it becomes drawn into brief interventions, exploring such issues as Parental Authority, Emotional Impulse, Mentorship & Accountability, and Escaping Opioids. As the action freezes on stage youth, parents, law enforcement officers, civic leaders, and educators join the conversation moderated by Romeo’s high school mentor, Coach Lawrence. To sustain a domino effect of the play’s message What if Works will donate production resources necessary for the Denver Center for International Studies High School to remount the project with a partnering high school as part of the 2019 Denver Public School Shakespeare Festival at the Denver Center for the Performing Arts. Graduate mentors from the Metropolitan State University of Denver will guide the production.
The message of “The R+J Effect: Denver” is plain; as cooler heads prevail commonsense will exhale. Commonsense tells us that when confronted with decision-making many options are on the table – the only option to be avoided is violence. Gun violence is an incendiary topic yet the fact remains that until we find commonsense solutions innocent lives will continue to be lost.
While much of the project is volunteer-based, support is necessary to cover production costs such as air travel, accommodation, meals, study guides and graduate mentor fees. Please be generous and help us reach our goal of $10,000.
