Founded by Y on Earth Community Ambassador and Global Advisory Board Member Sarah Arao, Mantle of Hope is a bright light in Uganda, Africa that provides women, girls, and boys a variety of life-skills education, environmental stewardship training, and personal and community support.
Specifically, Mantle of Hope supports survivors of sex-trafficking and childhood marriage by providing safe harbor, personal support, and training in sewing and other livelihood skills. Under Sarah Arao's leadership, these resilient women and girls also give back by sewing sanitary pads for other young women in their communities so that their menstrual cycles don't interfere with their school attendance and prospects for future independence.
Additionally, the organization trains boys and young men in environmentally-friendly construction practices, and trains all of its participants in tree-planting and other ecological restoration activities.
To Date, Sarah Arao and Mantle of Hope have:
- Provided 1,520 young women with sanitary menstrual pads in 10 rural schools (made by seamstresses in the program)
- Empowered 250 young women and young men with sewing, hairdressing, and green-building skills-training
- Provided over 900 girls and boys with mental health training and support
- Planted over 5,000 trees
- Provided over 50 women safe refuge and recovery support after fleeing child-marriage and/or sex trafficking
