Chasing A Dream In NYC

Hello everybody! This pride thing is something I’ve been internally battling for a little while now. If you’re anything like me, you were taught that asking people for help or for money is wrong, embarrassing or frowned upon.
Therefore, you could guess how much it took for me to do this and you should know I wouldn’t be here if this wasn’t my dream.
My name is Diamond A. Durant, a junior Multimedia Journalism major (entertainment focus) with a Multiplatform Production minor at Morgan State University. I am a deans list student, a member of the National Association of Black Journalists, a member of he National Council of Negro Women (MSU-Section) and I am the curator of Project Dream Philly, an upcoming college geared program targeting Philadelphia’s youth. Also, my article titled “The Secret Life of An African American Light-skinned Girl” was published by the Huffington Post when I was only 18, making me one of the youngest black women to ever be published by them.
With all of these attributes, I was blessed enough to be accepted into the IRTS Multicultural Media Career Workshop & Conference in New York City taking place October 11th-14th where I will be able to rub shoulders with companies like ABC, NBC, BET, Viacom, iHeart Radio, CBS, Disney and the one I’m most excited about: Complex Magazine.
Unfortunately, I was denied for their very limited accommodations grant last minute which would’ve provided me with housing, transportation and etc..
So recently, I’ve been struggling on what to do. Asking God for answers & trying to trust his plan. I’ve pretty much been praying day and night about this and I’ve finally conjured up the will to swallow my pride and ask those around me for help.
Some of you might think that $500 is a stupid amount to ask for or ask “you don’t just have $500 to give?”. But, when your Mother is working 9-5 everyday to support 3 kids in out-of-state universities and pay bills, $500 on short notice is a burden. And if you’re a college student, only working part-time to feed yourself and just to make it to the next day, you know what it feels like to need help.
If you can’t help, I more than understand and encourage you to post this somewhere in case you know someone who can & if you can, thank you so much in advance. I do not take stuff like this for granted because I know there are so many people out here who could change the world if they had the financial support.
Peace, love & light
