//Trip Was On Hold  for Over a Year Due to Various Cancer Treatments//

Please help me get to the Vatican!  My name is Cheryl (Beekman) Tobin and I'm a 48 year old mother of two. I was diagnosed with Stage IV Salivary Gland Carcinoma Ex Pleomorphic Adenoma of the left parpharyngeal space in December 2013. This is an extremely rare form of Cancer and usually occurs in patients in their 70s & 80s and is caught rather early by presenting as a benign lump in the neck. My Cancer was originally situated deep in my parotid space near the base of my skull and also encased my carotid artery which made  my Cancer inoperable. I had no warnings other than an ear ache and jaw pain which my doctors first thought was due to teeth grinding at night and then to TMJ. It was a complete shock to me! Wow - Stage IV Cancer at age 45! Since my Cancer was inoperable, my best chance for survival was concurrent chemotherapy and radiation therapy.  I completed my treatment at MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, TX on March 14, 2014 (also my son's 18th Birthday). I am thankful that my tumor shrunk quite a bit, but it did not go away & my Cancer was still inoperable. Although I was hopeful and I believe in miracles, my prognosis was poor. I tried to go back to work while recovering from treatment but I just couldn't manage working full time. My energy levels were not where I wanted them to be & I had enough pain that I was highly medicated. So I left my job in December 2014 (still awaiting my medical retirement to come through). In May 2015 it was determined that my tumor shrunk enough to have the surgery. Although it was extremely dangerous, I made it through even while cutting out a large portion of my carotid artery. That was followed by another round of concurrent chemoradiation therapy that lasted until August 2015. Shortly there after, I felt a lump in my neck. Unfortunately that lump was cancer. So that, along with my follow-up news that part of my surgery didn't take properly and I was back under the knife for another surgery in December 2015. This time my skin graft didn't take so I had another surgery in January 2016. This didn't go well as planned due to the previous problems with skin graft/lack of bone so my body had to try and heal itself. Amazingly enough, my body did a tremendous job and I was starting to feel great. In March 2016 I went back to MD Anderson Cancer Center for scans and I have a new tumor at my skull base along with nodules in both of my lungs. Now I am completely inoperable and have started a round of chemotherapy. My prognoses without chemo is 3-6 months & my prognosis with chemo is 6-9 months. This is it - my last chance to get over to the Vatican & see the Pope!

Thank God for my loving husband & children - I couldn't have imagined going through any of this without them!

I am so thankful for all your prayers and appreciate all your well wishes! If you are able to donate, I would like to send you a token of my gratitude based on the amount donated as follows:
