The homeless problem has become a national epidemic and ineffective government programs and the lack of affordable public housing / homeless shelter over capacity have created a perfect storm.
The Yoga 4 Homeless vision is to provide yoga to homeless men, women and children worldwide. We believe yoga should be accessible to everyone and the power of yoga to improve the physical, mental and spiritual health of the homeless community.
Please visit our website www.yoga4homeless.com for many more details on the program and our mission. We also have a full program execution plan and budget that has been developed to support the implementation of the Yoga 4 Homeless program.
Our mission first is to improve the physical, mental and spiritual health of the homeless community in San Diego first and then replicate our model to other communities around the country and potentially the world.
We are in development on providing custom the tools, resources and education to assist homeless community with access to yoga mats, teachers and ongoing education.
Overview:
Yoga 4 Homeless is group of San Diego business leaders, experienced non-profit directors, yoga studio owners, teachers and local volunteers that are focused on developing a proven system to bring yoga to homeless communities. To make this a reality we are creating a model that includes grassroots events to raise awareness, yoga training curriculum development as well as an online platform to help identify and connect the yoga teachers, studios, homeless shelters and community centers that want to serve the homeless community. We will create corporate partnerships and align with charitable organizations to incentivize and help fund a majority of the ongoing costs of the program.
Right now there's a significant challenge for the homeless to get educated on the benefits of yoga, to find the space with the equipment and yoga teachers or videos to be able to practice yoga. There are a very limited number of studios and shelters across the country that offer yoga to the homeless currently. However the shelters and studios that have implemented yoga as a practice have documented positive anecdotal impact and case studies.
Our game plan is to create a network of yoga teachers, studios as well as homeless shelters and community centers. We will combine the network and grassroots based events with corporate partnerships to help fund the development of sustainable yoga programs for homeless communities.
We have chosen the San Diego homeless community as the initial community we will focus our efforts on. San Diego is the #4 largest homeless community in the country with 48% of our local homeless with no access to sleep in a shelter based on a shortage of space and public housing being at capacity.
We are confident that with $200,000 in funding for our GoFundMe campaign plus corporate sponsorships and local volunteers it will allow us to implement the necessary plans to establish the Yoga 4 Homeless program into a year around and sustainable program moving forward. We envision hiring a full time director to run the San Diego office and rely on a volunteer coordinator and volunteer force to assist with grassroots events to generate more awareness, educate the homeless community and successfully implement the Yoga 4 Homeless program.
