Venezuelan Medical Crisis
More than 80% of medications can no longer be found in Venezuela. People are dying from hunger, lack of clean water and poor medical attention, specifically due to no medication. Children are covered in scabies as a result of no soap or shampoo for basic hygiene; they have yet to receive vaccines and have no antibiotics or ointments to cure even minor cuts and scrapes. There are no fever reducers, painkillers, antihistamines, diabetes medication, blood pressure medication, or simple antibiotics. From this lack of basic medication, a minor cold or cut can turn into a debilitating, even deadly infection. Medical supplies such as sterile gloves and gauze, antiseptics, medical alcohols, needles, nebulization kits, surgical sutures, and even basic cleaning products to provide a sterile environment are impossible to find.
What We Do
#HealVenezuela raises funds and awareness for the health care crisis in Venezuela. We are two Venezuelan girls living in the USA who want to help our country. We send medicine and medical supplies to a Venezuelan nonprofit, Salud Por Venezuela, which organizes medical stations in the slums of Venezuela. Heal Venezuela's primary aim is to buy medication and medical supplies that are urgently needed to improve the health of Venezuelans. We also seek to inform the international community about the health crisis in Venezuela and bring attention to the urgent needs of Venezuelans. Medication we most need include antibiotics, painkillers, fever reducers, asthma medication, blood pressure medication, Neosporin, and antiparisitics. Supplies include: Gloves, cotton balls, alcohol wipes, hydrogen peroxide, soap, hospital cots, scissors, oximeters, blood pressure reader, otoscopes, stethoscopes.
Salud Por Venezuela
Salud Por Venezuela runs a program of pop-up medical stations in the slums of Venezuela. They are an extension of the Universidad Central de Venezuela (UCV) medical school. Once a month, volunteer doctors and medical students see patients and administer medication and medical care. Together we coordinate the setup, queueing, and organizing of the ambulatory clinic location as well as the patient sign-in and follow-up. They then produce full reports to present to the university and create studies in order to help improve the general health of the country. Doctors range from general practitioners to specialties including internal medicine, pediatrics, gynecology and obstetrics, dermatology, and traumatology. Our medical stations provide medical care to about 300 people, most of whom have no other access to medication or attention. All of the funds raised by Heal Venezuela buy medication and medical supplies for the pop-up medical stations.
Why Your Money Matters
When you donate to Heal Venezuela, you ensure someone in Venezuela is getting treated. Salud Por Venezuela informs the Heal Venezuela team of what medicines and supplies are most needed. From the money raised through GoFundMe, Nicole or Florence purchase medicine or supplies in Miami/NYC and then ship them to Venezuela which is then recieved by the Salud Por Venezuela team. All shipping is free due to the generosity of our shipping partner. The medication is received by the Salud Por Venezuela team and organized for the next medical station. After each station, a comprehensive report is created and the list of necessary medication and supplies is updated. Each month the process, including the medical stations, are evaluated and reviewed in order to ensure that funds and resources are being used to the maximum benefit of Venezuelans. We will never donate money bills, only materials and medicines. You can see updates, including pictures and videos, of the buying, shipping, and receiveing process on our facebook page!
